I found this article while searching for something else the other night... I found it interesting, as it gave me a bit of insight into why people choose not to vaccinate. While i completely disagree with the non-vax opinion, i understand that i have different beliefs on the matter.

Reasons why people choose not to vaccinate (http://www.vaccination.org.au/articles/article533.html)

I didn't like it, she seemed very bitter and if you look at her references she only has 2 sources

I thought it was hilarious! I loved the bit about "hygiene" in "Nimbin-type communes".

Seriously, she just made a bunch of broad (and inaccurate) statements about the 'types' of people who don't vax and why, then proceeded to argue why they're all just nutty conspiracy theory freaks. How very patronising. *yawn*

The best site to get Stats and info regarding Vaccinations is WHO (World Health Organization), I don't think they do what they do just for giggles.

And some of her reasons why she believes people don't Vax i've seen here so it's not all biased.

The non vaxers always say that they are well researched and that the sites that they get their info from are correct, so what are we vaxers suppose to believe... nothing I guess;)

It was very outdated, she had only used 2 references.

She made it out that people who didn't vax didn't do any research, and are brainwashed by other non vaxxers which is quite untrue.

It was...well...Meh! It was worth the time reading it. TBH i wouldn't take anything she seriously because it was written like a highschool project!

True i have seen some of the reason she stated on BH, But...she made it out as if those reasons are not valid at all.

Research shows they believe any or all of the following: that the immunisation program is an exercise of the power of medicine and the government authorities in society and they strongly oppose any infringement of civil liberties such as compulsory vaccination through schools; that drug companies are greedy multinationals who pay to have things covered up; that there is a conspiracy between drug companies, doctors, and the government; that even WHO receives funding from pharmaceutical companies, so it can’t be trusted; that the drugs themselves contain poisons and impurities and cause new diseases because they go against nature and are essentially evil; and that safe alternatives exist that are not being researched for financial reasons. [B]They make emotional appeals that are difficult to oppose because they feed into common parental anxieties and mount strong community campaigns against vaccination. [B/] These are the parents for whom the conscientious objectors' ACIR forms were made.

The bits i bolded-

1st bit i highlighted- its the truth, pharmacuetical companies are greedy so and so's and they do have dealings with the government. Also Dr's are paid a financial incentive for children they vax.

2nd bit i highlighted- seriously we feed into parental anxieties? Come on! I think they have a right to feel anxious. They don't need non vaxxers to "feed" them anxieties, i think there instincts do that on their own

And for one, i do not go around "campaiging" against vaccinations in my community, i couldn't give a rats *** if people vax or not

She makes it out as if all these things are untrue and are not valid points

Not sure what you mean by that, but i can tell you from my own exprience, i have looked at pro-vax sites as well as anti vax sites, ones in between, books from the library and also spoke to my vax happy Dr.

If you have researched, what type of sites have you looked at?

Yeah, I've looked at the WHO info. I agree - it does help with the big picture.

Opinion pieces often contain some truth. But it kind of gets distorted among the subjective and judgemental content.

I don't really understand your point either... They could probably read exactly what non-vaxers have and come to their own conclusions I guess. I just try to avoid pure opinion pieces such as the one in the link.

SIZE=1]Remembering nothing is 100% safe, nor 100% effective, in nearly 200 years the safe effectiveness of vaccination in reducing the severity and incidence of deadly disease has been proven many times (for example, Galazka 1984, Velmirovic 1991, Koplan 1985). In 1987 Holden et al calculated the benefit : harm ratios for each of the major vaccines, and found the overall a “typical program” of immunisation in a developing country could prevent 45 deaths and 12 serious handicaps per month, while causing 1 death every 22 years and 1 serious handicap every 7.5 years. [/SIZE]

I particularly liked the above passage, and feel safe with the fact that I do choose to immunise my children.

I don't try and convince other people not to vax, as a matter of fact, I say vax away! Herd immunity is one of the reasons I can afford not to vax my baby. If people make educated decisions for their babies whether to vax or not I think it should be supported.

I think she's cranky at someone and should get off her soapbox unless she gets better (and more recent) information. I loved the sweeping generalisations though... HILARIOUS.
