Hi, my name is Jeanette. I am a 28yr old married mum to Jacob, 8.5, Brooke, 7.5 and Matthew, who will be 2 on May 25. I have been married to Pete for 9.5yrs and live in a little town near bathurst in NSW.

I found this site by accident, but it looked like a friendly place so I thought I'd join. I look forward to posting a lot more when I have time.

I never did make it back after taking the kids to school and I'm just flying by now so I'll do a quick run down on my kids.

Jacob Bradley was born on September 9 1997 weighing in at 11lb (4.92kg) after I had been told her would be 8 MAYBE 9lb. I am only 5ft 4in tall and I weighed 49kg when I got pregnant with him, so having such a huge baby was a big shock to me...........and the midwives. When I was 20wks pregnant with him, I had a routine US scan done and it showed that my placenta was a little low so I was sent for another scan at 30wks. This scan showed that the placenta had moved up, but there was a problem with his kidneys, so I was sent to Sydney (9hr return drive) for a more detailed scan. This showed that his kidneys were 3 times the normal size, or the same size as a mans fist. I had to have another scan done in Sydney 2wks later, if the problem had got any worse, I would have to be induced in Sydney, thankfully things hadn't changed too much after 2wks. Jacob decided to enter the world 3 days after his due date and was started on antibiotics when he was 24hrs old. When I was discharged, we had to book him in for an ultrasound to see how things were going. Nothing had changed, so we were sent back to Sydney to find out what was causing the problem. He was catheterised and injected with a radioactive dye. They then took x-rays as he peed and it showed that there was a blockage in his ureters. He had Bilateral Hydronephrosis caused by a UPJ obstruction. His right kidney was badly damaged, they were sure if it could be saved. He was booked in to have the obstruction removed when he was 3wks old.
Yet another trip to Sydney and he had the surgery done on his good kidney, doing the good one first in case the bad one failed, meaning he would have a kidney in good working order. 3hrs after the operation he managed to down 280mls of formula, they didn't think he would want anything for at least a day. They had him on an epidural for pain relief which was absolute heaven for us all. He was just laying there watching the world go by with a huge grin on his face. He was discharged after 5 days. We had to go back home beforehand and leave him there, the maternity payment given to us by Centrelink had been spent on travel and accomodation costs so Pete had to go back and work. I had nowhere to stay so I had to go too. Leaving him there was the hardest thing I'd ever had to do, but he was in good hands.
3wks later, he was back for yet another surgery on his right kidney. This time he had morphine as pain relief and it was horrible. He was in agony and I had to ask them to increase it, which they did and he was happier after that. Things went well and he was allowed home after 5-6 days. We had to go back 2wks later for a checkup and found that things were looking well and we were told he could stop taking the antibiotics. By the time he was 8wks old, he had spent 4wks in hospital but I hadn't had time to bond with my baby. he made great progress with his milestones though, rolling over at 5wks, crawling at 6mths 2 days, crusing the furniture 30mins later and walking at 10mths. He didn't talk until he was 22mths though so he was in speech therapy until he was 5.5yrs old.
Now at the age of 8.5, he is 4ft 9in tall and weighs 43kg.

Brooke Jacinta was born 2 days early at 8:30pm on December 24 1998 (how glad was I that she wasn't born on Christmas Day!!!!) weighing in at 8lb 3oz (not sure what that is in kg). Her kidneys had looked pretty good before birth but we were rather shocked to find out that she had an incomplete cleft lip. We were discharged after 6 days and she had a kidney ultrasound done just to make sure. Things looked great there, what a relief. When she was 2wks old we had to go to Sydney to see a plastic surgeon. He said she would need surgery when she was 3mths old.......which I thought was the end of things. No one had told us that cleft lips caused ear infections, tonsilitis and reflux. My poor baby girl was screaming 18hrs a day until she was 10mths old, it was a nightmare. Anyway, she ahd the lip surgery done and all was good, but I really missed her old smile. They said that I should see my GP about getting her something for her reflux, which I did, only to be told that nothing would work. I should have seeked a second opinion, but I didn't.
When she was 20mths old, she had grommets put in her ears as she had suffered from 6 ear infections in 12mths. She had said her first word a week earlier, but a week later, she was using 3-4 word sentences, the change was dramatic!! Because I had severe postnatal depression, I hadn't realised that my little girl was deaf until she was 6mths old (due to glue ear).
When she was 4, she had her tonsils removed due to having tonsilitis 5-6 times a year. She was on double strength amoxil for 3mths prior to make sure that she would be well enough for the operation, which we had done in Sydney also because there are no specialists out this way.
When she was 5, she had yet another operation done on her lip in Sydney, just to tidy things up a bit. When she had her checkup done a few weeks later, we were given a referal for her to see an orthodontist, thanfully he wasn't in Sydney but in Orange. He gave us a huge list of work that needs doing, I really don't want to know what it is going to cost us. She needs her palate widened, braces put on, her adult teeth haven't come through far enough so they will need to be pulled out slightly, she has one tooth that came in sideways (she was missing a small piece of her gum there) that will need to be turned around, she will possibly need a bone graft done as well. Medicare cover 75% of all costs, but 25% of that seems like an awful lot to me. She will also need more surgery done on her nose when she is older as it is flat and unsymmetrical on one side. She is still beautiful all the same, even Dr's can't tell that she has a cleft which is great. She is 7.5 now going on 17. one thing though, it took me until she was 3-4 before I would wonder where the scars on her stomach had gone. As Jacob had had them since he was 3wks old, I expected that she would have them too as they had always been there on him. KWIM???

Matthew Jon was my unplanned baby. I was on the pill when I fell pregnant with him, so he is obviously meant to be here. He was born on his due date, May 25 2004 weighing in at 10lbs 2oz. He had no cleft lip or cleft palate which was great. I went home 2 days later.....it was so nice not having to wait around for pediatritions like I did when Jacob and Brooke were born!! When he was 2wks old he had a kidney ultrasound done (he peed on the technician, lmao) and the results came back all clear, I could finally sleep at night not worrying whether he had the Hydronephrosis or not. Both the cleft and hydro are inherited conditions, yet no one else in either family has either condition. It was very strange having a baby who didn't need to see a Dr each week. Matthew got his middle name in memory of my younger brother Jonathon. He died when Brooke was 6wks old. Its nice though, Matthew looks like my brother did at the same age, he is like a living memorial.

At this stage, there are no plans to extend the family, though I would dearly love to have another baby. I will have to talk my husband into it though, he hates the idea that we had to buy a bigger car just to have Matthew and if we have another baby, we would need another car. You never know though!!

lol, yeah, he was the size of a 3mth old apparently. I wouldn't know as I never had a small one. Matthew is now the same height and weight that Jacob was at the same age, so I think he will be big when he is done growing. If I ever have another baby, I hope I get a nice little 7lber.
