Just wondered what your thoughts were.
I am getting my little boy christened next weekend and I am still trying to decide what to put him in.
Do I go the christening gown (which is made from my mum's wedding train and I got christened in it as did my sisters and my niece - who is 5)
or
Do I buy a cute lil white tux that would look adorable???
I really like the idea and tradition of the gown - but I am no sure exactly about a boy being in a gown?!?!
What are your thoughts??

I'm not that keen on a gown on a boy but it depends on his age. I see he's 19 weeks so he's still pretty young. I love the tux idea
I reckon it's your son, your decision- if you want him in a gown, put him in a gown! Personally, I'm not a fan of the baby tux (don't know why!?) and I'm not too sure if I would put him in a gown either, so that really doesn't leave ANY options, does it!?! lol
How lacy, filly, frou frou is the gown?

It is kinda "pretty"
I wish when we got married we bought my DH's wedding suit rather then hiring one - the we could have used his white tie for London so we still had a bit of menaing in the outfit
Maybe I could get my mum to make the tie out of an under layer of my dress - I dunno.....

Hi HayleyD,
We put our twins in Christening gowns - they were 6 months old and wore the same gowns that my sister and I had worn at ours (we're twins too)
Yes, they were in a "dress" but my mum put some blue ribbon through the lace at the bottom (to replace the pink) and that was sweet.
Would you like to see a photo of them in their glory? Might put you at ease that boys look fine in a traditional gown...

It is traditional for both boys and girls to be christened in the 'gown'.
I would stick with tradition.

My brothers both wore a gown. I have had the vision since I had DS1 that all my kids would be christened together, so I can see my kids wearing a suit but our youngest at the time wearing a gown.

My husband has the most beautiful christening gown that has been handed down for generations. It was his great grandmothers and it is beautiful. However we never had him christened, I just dressed him up and took photos.
So I guess I am saying I am a fan, they are only babies and in times past all babies wore where little dresses/ nighties even the boys as they didn't have much else.

I guess I was just a bit unsure as I come from a family of 4 girls - and we all wore the dress - as I said my mum made it from her wedding dress and my sister's daughter wore it - but I really don't know any little boys that have been christened in a gown.... but it seems it's not as uncommon as I thought

NP, and for the record, nobody made fun of them being in dresses... :) it's just an accepted thing for Christenings...
Let us know what you decide to do...:goodvibes:

We had DS baptised when he was 6 months old and I don't know why but I didn't want him in a gown. Now I kinda wish I had of. He was baptised in a summer suit- CLICK (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r75/Haylie_Anne/DSCF0704.jpg) . It looks kinda funny cause it isn't sitting right in the photo.
If this bub is a boy it would be nice for him to wear the same suit as DS but that wouldn't work because by the time it is 6 months old it will be the middle of winter and the suit won't be warm enough. So I think I am going to get someone to make a gown with the material from the skirt of my wedding dress and get either a pink or blue ribbon threaded through somewhere, depending on the sex of bub.

Nah I don't see it as a problem. My brother, myself and all my cousins (over 20 of us majority boys) were all christened in the same gown, as was my Mother, her sister and 2 of her brothers. A brother was the first to wear the gown actually. Unfortunately the gown is no longer kept or shared amongst the family so I found an very traditional gown almost identical to use for my son and any future children. My son was going on 5 months when he was baptised. Here is (http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r34/missie_mack/PICT0876.jpg)a photo

oh I just remembered, the boys were wearing a long sleeved white bonds grow suit under their gown... the second they got out of that church I whipped off the gowns and put them back in the box, to be sealed until the next bubby was due to be christened!
My son wore a gown. As did his uncle. Did hear - Ï thought it was a boy...

Thanks Mummy to Mason and missie_mack for also sharing pics!!
I am feeling more confident with the gown idea now!!
Keep the pics coming!!
In answer to the OP, I think it's beautiful and traditional. It's pretty much an accepted thing at Christenings, especially if the boy's an infant.
Missie_Mack, James looks adorable in his christening outfit!

def the gown! I think a suit on a baby is a bit tacky personally.

Oh what a lovely tradition it is - a real family history there in that garment.
Personally I would prefer it to a tux on a baby - I don't think that is a good look.

I'd go with the gown too. Its traditional and an heirloom.
Just imagine when he has children, he can pass on the gown for them to wear and then when they have children and then it will just keep going. I like that idea. :)

Ok ladies- well I am going with the gown!!! I just went and picked it up from mum's and it's not as frilly as I thought. I am going to add some blue ribbon as well (thanks for the idea twinmumdee).
Will post pics up after next weekend!!

Definitely the gown. I am not a big fan of the tux or boy suits for christenings. A gown is traditional and I think it looks beautiful on babies. It shows the purity of the event. My DD had a gown and we will use it for all our babies, boy or girl. We have her name embroided into the bottom of the gown and will add each babies name as they are christened.
