I am so very excited that DH has finally given me permission (or given in which I hope it isn't), to 'trial' homeschooling for next term and see how it all goes. I'd really like to just find our feet with a more structured curriculum to start with and then work into our own way as time progresses.

Has anyone had any experience with the ACE or LEM curriculums? I really like the phonics program of LEM but think having to order each book individually would really cause the cost to increase a lot but I also like the ACE program and working though the PACES with daily goal setting etc. Can anyone speak from personal experience about these 2 programs? Or possibly recommend another curriculum that they have found to work really well. I do like the Christian curriculum but I guess it doesn't have to be faith based.

YAY! That's wonderful news!! :hugs:

I have used LEM in the past....it is a good program but very complicated lol....I didn't like it (for me) but there are others who love it...it depends on your childs learning style and your own teaching/organisational style.

ACE, we use now and LOVE it....it is very simple to follow and I feel really comfortable that he is getting what he needs through the daily/weekly/term/year goals.... With ACE, I feel comfortable that the basics are covered easily and then we can get on with learning whatever else they want to learn.

Good luck!

I haven't had experience with those, but I'm sure some other Hubbers have. :)
Pretty sure Ffrenchstar is using ACE for something. I think. :o

Thanks FS! I had forgotten that you had done them. How much time do you put into the PACES a week as I really want to be able to let him do his own 'projects' and follow his own interests and not have the curriculum just take up all his time. I have been looking at scrapbooking and lapbooking and I think he would really love to be able to work through a common theme for a week or more.

Sorry babbling, my mind just runs so fast with so many ideas whirling around. LOL

Yeah...that's exactly why ACE has been working so well for us....he can get it done in a couple of hours a day and I can be confident that the basics are covered and we can move on to the more important stuff hehe. We just choose to do ACE for ENglish, Maths, Wordbuilding and Science and for the rest we make it up as we go:thumbsup:

Awesome, that is exactly what I wanted to hear. I think I will put my order in at the end of the month!

Good to hear you're starting out on the homeschooling journey - I'm sure that you will love it.

Lapbooking is a great thing. We just got started with it this year - we used much more primative forms when our boys were a little younger.

It was fantastic - our latest was a study on China - inspired by the Olympic Games. There were so many interesting documentaries on, let alone the Games - so they took off researching in their OWN PROJECT TIME each day and had a fantastic lapbook completed by the end of the week.

My middle child loved it also, he did something that was appropriate for his age and level of reading but the amount of information they retained about China was amazing - and the questions required research by us all.

So they loved it - I loved it and it will be tops on our list of methods for a few more units we will do before the end of the year.

Nice to hear from you - no doubt we will hear about what is working well for your family over time. It's great to hear what others are doing - it often gives inspiration or ideas to areas we are all working on at one time or another.

Regards
Tracy
