Ok i'm going to sound like a total bimbo here, but I don't care...Ok my situation is that I will be bottlefeeding from birth....but my question is do I still have to express my milk to get rid of it?? do i take some type of a medication to 'dry it up' or does it just go away on its own???

In most cases you will not have milk when bub is born it is colostrum and by stimulating the breasts it will then around day 3 or so produce the milk, so no need to do anything at all!

i was unable to bf my ds due to his medical conditions so i had to dry my milk up. basically it ment not feeding or expressing until the milk "dried up. they go hard and hurt a fair bit. i used an old fashioned remedy that stinks but works. put cabbage leaves in your bra
dont worry about feeling dumb,we all have moments. when my ds was born i asked them when do babies open their eyes??!!! i like to blame the drugs for that one lol

I was always told that the sucking stimulates milk production, so I assume that if you FF from birth, then there will be no milk production.

I have heard your milk will come regardless but obvisouly if it's not being used it will dry up, if you want to to dry up faster use cabbage leaves they have a enzyme in them which halts milk production....

When I was in Hospital after my last baby was born
they told another mother, who had decided not to feed,
not to touch her breasts at all
its true sucking stimulates milk production
i am sure it would dry up otherwise or wouldn't come at all

Don't worry the midwives will advise you
after the birth

They would suggest you feed your baby cloustrum at the very least
but if you have made your mind up that is fine
Just do what you feel is right
I think the most important thing is
that you are happy

I would if I could...but I can't cos I have to immediately return to medication after the baby is born...and I’ve been informed my meds will harm my milk..so i'm not going to risk it...for my baby its just safer for her to be on the bottle.

Thanks for all the tips though!

My sister was unable to breastfeed due to medication and her Dr prescribed a tablet for her to take within 12/24 hrs (can't remember exactly) of giving birth and her milk didn't come in and she didn't have the discomforts associated with the milking coming/drying up etc.

It was perfect for her. She had to fight to get these tablets as the Midwife's kept saying "but you might change your mind and want to feed ...." But she stuck to her guns and got the tablets.

I'm not saying this is right for everyone - but in her situation where it wasn't safe for the baby to be BF by her, it made her less uncomfortable.

Unfortnuatlly in my cases, i was literally producing milk from 7.5 months onwards. it was NOT colustrum but milk, if you have that situation, just dont touch them, if they become unbearable (rather large, full of milk, a bit sore) you can just express a tiny bit (like 20mls or so) if you do fill up wiuth milk a fe days after birth then just leave them be and hope afte ra few weeks it dries up. If there is any pain or soreness, heat up some cabbage leafs in the microwave and wack them on

Good question diamonds!

I too have heard of a tablet taken after to birth to stop the milk. You should look into it:D

I bottlefed my DD straight from birth and my milk still came in anyway. For a few days you will most likely have your boobs feeling like rocks and very tender to touch whilst they are "drying up". As the other girls have suggested placing cabbage leaves on each boob provides great relief.....I know it's not the best look but it definately helps ease the discomfort of it. I use to place my leaves in the freezer before using them and the coldness really helped me feel a lot better. Hope it all goes well for you.

Just be careful that you don't get mastitis while your milk is drying up. Talk to your OB - or other specialist - about your reasons for not breastfeeding (I've read a few of your other posts - I think I understand the reasons), and ask them for their recommendations. It can be done without the discomfort, is my understanding, so it would be worth asking.
