View Full Version : FREE energy efficient light bulbs .. FREE (REALLY .. its FREE!)
hey all :)
just thought I would link you all to a site I only just learnt about (and wanted to check out for myself BEFORE I recommended it) ..
the site? www.envirosaver.com.au
why??? they give you FREE lightbulbs .. FREE
Basically its similar to the watersaver program that they just implemented (govt funded) where a plumber came and lowered your water use in the house.
This time - with envirosaver a employee comes to your house .. and goes through your house and replaces ALL your standard (basic) light bulbs with the new energy efficient ones :) (the only rule is that you need to have 5 minimum to replace) ..
there is NO spiel, NO selling, NO catches .. eta- seriously ,.. NO spiel .. I was EXPECTING ONE .. but NO!!! :yelclap:
you just make an appointment and are home when they turn up to put the bulbs in (they take the other ones away- so that the sheets balance at the end of the day etc) ...
I'm SO happy with the new lighting ..my house is so much brighter, and yet I'm SAVING energy. ( I had 12 bulbs replaced :D FREE!!)

LOL that would be right WA is the only state that they dont do.
Oh well it is WA....Wait Awhile
 melly .. email them .. outraged that you're being excluded .. I guess the more WAs who express that they are keen .. the faster it will happen??? (you can hope .. cant you??)

Yeah it was great we had that in NSW last year!! The only thing to be aware of is when the bulb needs to be disposed of they need to be wrapped in paper and placed in a plastic bag in the big. You also have to be careful if you break one. Its just because they contain small amounts of mercury.
This is the most current advice I have been given at work (I work in the energy industry and was involved in the distribution of the lightbulbs when the program was started in NSW :))
I"ve heard that ALL light bulbs contain an amount (differing amounts obviously) of mercury though???
I also heard that you shoudl NEVER vacuum up a bulb that is broken (any type) as it disperses the mercury .???

Veve TBH I am not sure about whether all light bulbs contain mercury or not but I can only quote what we advised customers when attending homes and replacing the old fashioned bulbs with compact fluroscent enviro bulbs(mid to late 2006) I would think the information would be fairly reliable based on the source but I will email a colleague who is at work today for clarification if you would like the info?
please :D
I would also like to know what the mercury does .. why do the bulbs have to have it??? (I'm obviously not well educated in the area of electricity and lighting ..)

When I was 7 months pregnant a deli I was in had electrical problems and their flouros exploded above me! Of course, I immediately rang the poisons information line and they advised that there is mercury in the globes but that the concentration is not large enough to have done any damage.

Well Um.... That would explain why I never got them. :o

Ok email back (boy we are efficient in my workplace :D )
Most CFL (compact fluroscent lights) or enviro lights contain roughly about 5 milligrams of mercury and it is used in a gas form. Incandescent lights do contain mercury as well in a much higher concentration and currently no replacement has been found for mercury within the lightbulbs but the race is always on. The CFLs are of course far better as some last up to 15 years and not many of the traditional style have this lifespan. Also to consider is that brown energy causes emissions of mercury into the atmosphere by burning coal and that the traditional light bulb uses more energy hence adding to the environmental impact.
In NSW the lightbulbs weren't handed out simply because the energy industry out of the goodness of their hearts they actually earned the company greenhouse credits which reduces the companies emission levels for the year, hence why everyone had to sign paperwork to confirm they actually got the products I would think it would be similar schemes in other states as they start to follow suit (cheeky sods!)
Veve does that provide you with enough data? I would think more information about these kind of things could be found on website such as DEUS (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/www.deus.nsw.gov.au) or DECC (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/www.environment.nsw.gov.au) who would both oversee this kind of thing in NSW.
I would love to educate people on how to reduce their electricity consumption but its quite hard to do over the net  I think (or rather know lol) a lot of people live in denial about what they have in their home that causes large amounts of consumption in their home relating to electricity usage but recommend anyone who has bulbs installed talking to the home auditors who come and install the bulbs  as they should (and I say should but mightnt) be a wealth of information
Thanks how exciting :D I'm all booked in. Andrew is very pleased we have some energy efficiant bulbs but we have trouble finding bulbs to fit so he's rubbing his hands together.
just a bump - in case night hubbers didn't see it :)

All booked.
Oh, one question. We have all screw in bulbs does that matter??
We had them out a couple of weeks ago and they changed 14:D. I booked them in for my folks, my grandpa and my aunty too:D

Screw in is fine. They do standard screw in and standard bayonet bulbs.
They came out here... we only had FOUR that needed to be changed :o The laundry, hall, bathroom and toilet. All the rest are either fluro or halogen.
Are they really bright? I can't stand that hospital feel that those really bright lights bring.

I havent noticed a difference since they were put in and they replaced pratically every bulb!
Generally enviro friendly lights are dimmer than other globes. We had enviro friendly globes all through our house and had to replace them with the old fashioned lights as they were affecting my and our 2 DS's vision.:no::no::no:
So you should be fine.

Well, yes and no :)
A 15 watt compact fluoro (enviro friendly) is about the equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent (regular) light bulb in terms of the amount of light they give out - but use far less power to do it. Most people probably have 100 watt bulbs in their living areas, so you'd need to get say a 23 watt enviro friendly one to have the same amount of light.
But a 15watt compact fluoro is going to be LOTS brighter than a 15 watt incandescent bulb :)
I bought the highest wattage available and it was still too dim at night time.
I would love it if when considering the effects on the environment designers of green products would also consider people with poor eyesight. I try and be as earth friendly as possible but they need to improve the globes for people like my sons and I.:hair::hair::hair::hair:
Sorry for the threadjack.
We just had the Enviro guy here and he replaced 21 globes!!
Thanks Veve for the thread!!:yelclap:

It took me three attempts to get someone to commit to coming out to us but eventually they did. Three times I booked and twice they cancelled, citing there wasn't anyone in my area at that time, so on the third time, I asked if it was worth my time pursuing it and they replied with a yes and that a special note would be made NOT to cancel me. :yelclap:
So, someone came and changed at least 30 lights and, apart from getting so many free bulbs, the best part is they are all matched to their purpose in terms of wattage and we have globes in sockets that had been empty!
He even offered to do all the globes in the empty house on our farm. When DH explained no-one was living there, he said, "They are free, lets do them anyway."
