My daughter was diagnosed with GORD at 4-5weeks old(shes now 3months old). she previously was on zantac but as it was not helping her, she was put onto losec 5days ago...
Now, ever since shes been on it after i give it to her then she has a feed she screams and wont stop. as if she is having tummy pains...
can losec cause this? could it be to harsh for her tummy? i hate seeing her in so much pain!
we arnt going back to the paed for another 3 and a half weeks.

Hi mummajugs

You sound pretty desperate. I hope you've got some good support looking after you. I'm sure you're doing a great job of looking after your little princess but do make sure someone is looking after you too. It's hard to have a screaming baby and no relief.

Now, screaming baby. Sometimes it can take 2 weeks for a new medication to 'kick in'. If this is the case for you, having taken her off the Zantac, but having the Losec not yet working, may be the cause of her discomfort. So for the past few days it is almost like she is unmedicated. I know it's awfully hard to manage anything with a screaming baby, but hopefully the Losec will start doing it's thing very soon. In the mean time, you will need to expect her (and maybe you) to be a little unsettled. If you are really concerned that something is wrong, it is perfectly acceptable to ring your paediatrician for some advice over the phone. Or even see your gp in the mean time.

There is not one easy way to fix reflux. You need to find the medication that suits your baby, try and keep her as upright as possible during her feeds, and also upright for 30 mins after a feed. If you are breastfeeding, it can sometimes help if you keep a diary of what you're eating and see if something could perhaps be upsetting her? Many reflux babies struggle with dairy and soy for example. If you are using formula, a change of formula may help.

Mostly you need to remember that parenting a reflux baby needs to be a team effort. It's a hard slog and you'll need to give yourself a break to recharge when you can. Try and get some help for your basic housekeeping and perhaps someone to take care of bub while you have a walk or go out for coffee a couple of times a week at least. RISA can help with emotional support but you will also need to have a good relationship with your gp and paediatrician as you may still have a little further to go with finding a suitable treatment for your baby.

RISA has phone contact people who can call you if you're feeling like you need someone to listen. Information about RISA can be found at www.reflux.org.au .

All the best
