I am meant to return to work from Maternity leave in 2 weeks but I don't want to go back full time and I know I don't have the option of working the hours I want at my old job, which is fine as I am happy to look for part time elsewhere.

Part of the reason is Childcare - the cost and availability for 2 kids full time. Doesn't really make it worth my while to go back full time  The other part is because I want to spend more time at home with my kids. I work from home part time at the moment but would like to find a job with a company part time so I can stop worrying about my super and tax and have someone else do it

My dilemma is, how do I tell my old boss that I won't be back. I was going to be a coward and send him an email (because apparently they are legal documents these days) explaining that due to lack of availability for daycare positions for full time care for both girls I will be unable to return to work at this point. Adding something like, please accept this as my formal resignation from my previous position within the company.......

Is that the wrong thing to do? I know I should have done it weeks ago but I have been a bit slack about it as I am wary of the reaction I might get.......

I definately wouldn't resign via email. (but thats' just me)
If they have been a good company to work for (which it sounds like they have), you owe it to them to at least do it in person. It shows you have respect and a sense of loyalty to them. (Remember you may need them as a reference). I used to have a little to do with HR before having bubs, and nothing annoyed me more then employees who *resigned over the phone/email, etc. *didn't give enough notice.

Thanks Bec... They have been an up and down company to work for. A lot of politics regarding relationships between mangers and employees - my boss was severly reprimanded while I have been away for his conduct hence why I am not too keen to go and see him - angry man

I think I will go and see his boss tomorrow armed with my resignation letter - never know I might not need to hand it over they might have me part time - depends how much they missed me I guess. I have been thinking I would have a better chance of getting my old position part time if I go in person. It was not busy (at all) so maybe I can convince them...that might be wishful thinking though....

Oh good luck, schmell!!!

It is really hard, isn't it?! I have had to face returning to work far earlier than we'd intended & than I would have liked, but my company surprised me by offering me a full time position in another dept, working from home! yay!!

So you never know your luck! :fingerscrossed:
