I lived in the Uk for nearly 5 years and always went to those crazy door buster NEXT sales!! I also liked topshop, and for work clothes I used to go to dorothy perkins and M & S. When my DD was born, my UK buddies sent us lots of GAP baby clothes that are just so adorable!!

I miss Next too and, though I never really bought much there, I miss wandering around River Island and Topshop. And United Colours of Benneton - I know DJ's import some stuff now but it's not quite the same.

I miss the UK version of Woolworths - goodness I miss their pick-n-mix bit! I also rather miss WHSmith ... it had a very distinctive smell (yes, okay, I'm nuts :D ).

It's a strange thing but I also miss shops that I never used to really use. Now that I'm trying to get baby essentials together, I miss Mothercare. I also miss The Disney Store - used to buy stuff for my siblings' children from there.

*sigh*

I love Next and Debenhams and I REALLY miss Boots the Chemist!! I love that place. My mum sends over parcels all the time, normally Next stuff. Because the seasons are different, we always seem to get the good sale stuff. There is a stall at one of the markets here and the girl imports all clothes from UK, it is good!!

maybe we should bombard our favuorite stores with begging letters to come to Oz!! I agree that here in WA they would for sure be sooooooo popular as every other person seems to be a Pom or from the british isles! :D My DH's Nan is always reminiscing about M&S food halls...and the quality of the clothes and that there nothing like it here...

Topshop, H&M, Zara, MNG, Karen Millen, Hobbs, Laura Ashley, Harvey Nicks, Harrods, Liberty, Kookai (so different to Aussie Kookai). BUT I do get a fix from Zara and Karen Millen in Melbourne and MNG in Sydney.

Everything is so much cheaper there when youre earning good pounds though :crying:

Next Baby clothes are just lovely - as are Monsoon and H&M - just so cute.

I must hint to my sister that Aoife is in need of more baby clothes from home.

I love Hobbs as well (for adult clothes not baby stuff)

Hey Ladies! I so miss Next!! And I love Karen Millen and Gap too!! So much more to choose from over there. We are going back over in May next year hopefully. We are still only ttc at this stage but hopefully we will be at the stage where we can go shopping and get lots of great stuff for a bub on the way!! :fingerscrossed:

And hopefully the folks will be sending us lots of goodies after we start a family!! BTW - can you order any of the gap or next stuff on line?

Not really. The closet thing as far as I can see is David Jones' baby section, though they tend to be a fair bit pricier. Babies Galore are okay, too.

Can I post here?
I am a Uk-in-law.
DH is from London and we go back every couple of years for a visit. And I refuse to come back without shopping. And I mean SHOPPING!
We bought heaps from H&M, Next kids, Mothercare (oooh... I think we were one of the first to have Maclaren stroller in Melbourne cos we bought one for DD from Mothercare while there. We would have ppl everywhere stopping us to ask what kind of stroller it was and where we bought it from. The disappointment when we said "oh yes sure... Mothercare.. umm.. London... Tullamarine Airport is right over there.... " hihihi

When will we get something that even remotely compares to Hamley's for toys? :smiliedance: oooh... I can feel the rush at the thought of the shopping.
Oh well, mmmmm.... how many more sleeps til next June? :crying:

Pixie

well looks likewe could be moving to the UK before next March now:rolleyes: ahh the shopping will cheer me up!!

Lut - I am a UK-in-law and we regularly go back aswell. When we finally fall pg I'll have to save some of my shopping for when we go over next May/June (perhaps we'll bump into each other there). So any recommendations, throw them my way!!! :smiliedance:

Yay... morganj. Wouldn't that be funny. Never meet in Aus, but bump into each other over there. LOL I'm in!
Now...recommendations..... Hamleys, Hamleys, Hamleys and umm... yeah, did I mention Hamleys???
It is an adult's dream come true... oh I mean a kid's dream come true! :D
What is it something like 5 levels of toys. And ONLY toys. WOW!!!
LOVED it.:smiliedance:

NEXT was great for kids and the big kids... (ME!) except customer service was pretty poor. I mean if we think we have something to complain about in Melbourne, aaargh... don't even bother in London. I honestly believe some of those ppl are in dire need of sun therapy. They all seem to have lost their smiles!
But the shopping.. mmmm

Mark&Spencer... well, I have to say looked like a cheapo lay out, but i bought the most expensive no name tracksuit in history. But I was stuck, as i was not about to make another 24 hour flight wearing jeans! I should have known better!

Mothercare can make someone clucky, even i they had no intentions of children before going in. We looked for one of those bath mats for kids all over Melbourne before we left for our trip. We thought it would be more hygienic for DD to sit on that in baths as we travelled around. Couldn't find it anywhere! Went to Mothercare to buy a stroller, and there it was looking at us. We got a Winnie the Pooh one. It has a temperature thingy on it. So when you fill the tub up, if it's too hot for a baby, the bee's wings become clear and it says "TOO HOT" on the wings!

I think our chemists can learn alot from Boots!

Oh yeah I think I recall Hamley's now. Just off Oxford St somewhere isn't it? Will have to go over with an empty suit case me thinks. I always loved Next when I loved over there. Great place for clothes. And yeah I know what you mean about lack of service in London - terrible!! My dh freaked out when he came over here and went into a shop and someone asked if they could help - He was wondering 'what did I do'? Not used to be asked if he needed help.

And I so miss Boots!!! They have everything!!! Love it!!

We are hoping to fall pg very soon and go over with a bub next year! :fingerscrossed: I'll have to ask you for some hints perhaps when the time comes. Where abouts in Melbourne do you live?

My (rather demented) friend sent me an "in case of emergency" pack from England today. It amongst other bizarre things, like two breast pads and nipple cream, the parcel contained a single Pampers nappy and a couple of Pampers wipes.

Now what I want to know is how can a nappy, which for all intents and purposes is no different than the Huggies ones in the other room right now, make me all nostalgic and homesick ... ?

My brother is doing a Contiki at the moment. His start and stop points are London. I had bought this brilliant L'Oreal Shampoo, conditioner and smoothing serum from Boots... somehow I managed to get the smoothing serum to last 2 years.. how? With lots of care not to overuse, knowing that I can't just go out to the "high street" and pick up another from Boots! :crying:
But when my bro asked me what I wanted from overseas I told him he'll need to visit Boots for me to restock on my hair serum! :D

Morganj, I am in the Northwest of Melbourne. And you?

Good luck on TTC.. and definitely an empty suitcase next trip!

Aww.. Beany, how nice of your friend. But um how far were 2 breast pads meant to get? Still, it's the thought that counts.
Now I have to say, finding the equivalent of Huggies overseas was not that easy. I felt homesick on a 6 week trip everytime we went shopping for nappies for DD. I obviously didn't think I needed to pack a lifetime supply of Huggies, but I'll know better next time for DS.
