View Full Version : How many kids do you thinks a big family?
I think 8 is big, but get a lot of comments that people think mine of 6 is huge.:)
I do think the transition from 4 to 5 was a turning point, because even without DH in the car we HAD to update to a bigger one!
How many children in a family do you think it takes to be concidered large?

Anything over 4 is large in my books.
these days people think more than two
is too much.
I would like to have 5
but i think 10 is huge
and is rare

I think more than 4 is big.
I am an only child and DP is the oldest of 10 (thats a lot  ). I want 3, maybe 4, only time will tell, but he is happy with just the 2 we have at the moment, but is thinking about # 3 :fingerscrossed:
im going to say more then 8 :)
i'd love to have more then 4... but might have a bit of a rest for a while..;)
Dp is one of 12  And i dont want to beat her record..lol :D
I think more than 3 is a big family, because with 4 or more, IMO you need to think about a large house/car etc. I'm an only child, my DH has one brother, but my dad is one of 10:eek:

I agree with zenifa  - more than three is starting to get into the big family area. These days most people stop at 2 or 3 so anything more than that would be considered big I guess.
With 4 you start to alter aspects of your life - a standard dining table seats 6, you'll need a bigger car (standard sedan seating 5), bigger house, more furniture (think about the number of chairs in your lounge room) and so on.
Having said all that I am not anti "big families". I would love to have 3 or more children. I grew up with just my sister and myself and although we have an incredibly close relationship it would have been nice to have other siblings. My hubby has one brother and two sisters and it is a really nice sized family. I am only concerned with the costs involved in bringing up my children if I have more than 3  .

Anything that requires an upgrade to a new car, or a table bigger than kitchens were intended for!!!

I have 4 beautiful boys and am only 28 and I think that it is wonderful and would not change anything. I agree, organisation is the key. If I don't do my morning rotuine I get all out of wack. I like everything done before I get the boys to school so I have the rest of the day to spend with the other 2 at home. I unfortunatly have had a tubal ligation so there will be no more for us but I would probably have another if given the opportunity. As far as money goes fortunatly DH has a good job so things are pretty good although a bigger house is on the books as the boys are starting to need more space. I must admit sometimes I feel like pulling my hair out but that does not last for long, I find it very rewarding having a big family. :smiliedance: :smiliedance: :smiliedance: :smiliedance:

I agree
I also agree with a couple of ladies have said previously, anything over 3 children is considered big these's days.Because it does mean a bigger car than the standed 5 seater cars and a bigger place more room, as it is we have a 3 bedroom house and we have 3 children and it's cramped, so we are making room for a 4th bedroom for our youngest. Both my parents came from a large family.

I just had a reality check! lol I had thought that an 8 seater was the normal size for a dinning table, but after reading this post had to giggle, that I see the unnormal as normal now. IYKWIM
Its funny how you think what you see each day, is what everyone has, when I go out, I don't even see the small table or patio settings. I don't glance at a tent unless it's a 10 man or bigger, so I really think big is more out there than it is. This last week, Ive found there is a load of stuff Ive been overlooking, cause it would be useless for us.
Thanks for the giggle.

I think that 1 child is small, 2 children is perfect, 3 children is manageable and 4 children is asking for trouble... anything more than this and I take my hat off to you!!!

i know that centrelink considers 4 or more to be a large family. when we had bubs we started getting the large family supplement too. i would love to have 3-4 kids but it was hard enough to convince dh to have the last one (as he has 3 from a previous marriage.) but i am slowly talking him into 1 more. he has told me that i have to get my licence before he will let me start trying though.

we only have 1 but I'd love more but can't :crying:
I'm one of 6.
my mum is one of 15 (although nana carried #16 to full term and lost her)
my dad (passed away when I was 2) was one of 11
my stepdad is one of 9
Looks like I'm letting the team down somewhat!!!!! oh well :(
so for me anything above those numbers is large to me (except for my little contribution of my DS - I love him to death so he more than makes up for the lack of more)

crumbs I just looked at my figures and between 4 women (not counting myself) they produced 41 children  (and that's not counting any that may have died before full term/or at full term).
my goodness that is alot of children between 4 women :yelclap: congratulations to them for keeping their sanity

I am planning to have two, but I think anything more than 6 kids is a large family( they will need two car:yes: )
My mum said 3 kids is now considered large
so she believes we should be receiving the supplemnt from the govt.
anybody know if they are changing it from 4 to 3?

well, i was gonna say 6 or more, but from reading what people have said about cars and dining suites etc, im thinking maybe they are right with the 3/4 limit :)
i am one of 7 (we lived in a 4 bedroom house - no issues), my mum was one of 6 and my dad one of 12.
i havent decided how many i want (am waiting and seeing LOL) but DH is pretty set on 2 (he is an only child).
i think people who only have a 2 or 3 children (or no children) overestimate what you need for larger family groups.

so true
that is the issue now
bigger hose and bigger car
before the forth one comes along
even though we have a 5 bed house, we only use 3 of the room, as one is really a study, and that has a musty smell in it, and I wouldnt sleep in there, so dont let the kids, DH has taken it to be his time out room (and storage too) anther room is my clothes room! LOL (well for all clothes, not mine, I dont have that many) the people that used to live here converted it to a sewing a room, and have a bench (with cupboards and lovely deep drawers that go in a U shape, so theres no room for it to be a bedroom.
$ boys share a room, one has his own, the girl in with us.

I think anything more than 3 these days. Everything is just so expensive and with more than 3 you need a bigger car, bigger bedrooms, bigger house.
One of my ancestors had 24 kids.....better them than me is all I can say.
