Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows if it is normal to bleed before the placenta comes out on its own?
Is it normal to bleed a bit without any concern or should there not really be much at all?
If the placenta is still in, and you start breastfeeding, would this make the uterus contract and then bleeding start?
Sorry, I know I'm not very clear, it's just that I would like a physiological 3rd stage and I am worried about being pressured into it being managed if I start to bleed a little. Which is no prob if I need it but if a little bit is normal then I'd like to know so I know. If that makes sense :o
I kind of doesn't make sense - to me anyway-sorry!!
I can't remember a significant amount of bleeding. I had a waterbirth and got out to deliver the placenta and I don't remember much blood at all. Obvioulsy when the placenta came out there was a fair bit of blood with that and a fair bit of bleeding afterwards.
Do you mean you want a natural third stage without the Syntocin? If you start to bleed too much they are going to manage it because it can quickly go into an emergency situation. I think ( but don't quote me) that syntocin can lessen this as it helps the uterus contract. I had the syntocin - after being in labour for however long, I figured I would just want that bit over and teh cord cut so my husband could hold out baby - and I that was how I felt. My placenta came out about 15 minutes after the birth and 5 minutes after the injection.
yes your questions make sence :)
usually there is a dribble of blood just before the placenta comes out - the main concern is alot of blood well before the placenta comes out...
and yes breastfeeding produces hormones to help the uterus contract to get the placenta out :)
i had two natural 3rd stages, one was 15mins, one was 35mins... they were starting to get concerned at about the 30min mark, but i told them to back off and i wasnt having the syn, they let me be and the placenta came perfectly... shock horror  gotta love the medwives ahy! ;)

I haemoraged (sp?) before the placenta came out with DS2. I lost 2.5L and ended up having 5 transfusions.
What is the policy where you are deliverying regarding retained placenta? How long do they let you go before it is considered a problem?

Not sure what the policy is but I was in theatre about 40mins after DS was born as I'd lost so much blood.

I meant for the OP :) I am sure they'd have you in pretty quick for a PPH ( post-partum heam)!
