I noticed recently that Tonkin Hwy in perth has a bike lane and with no fences or protective barriers cyclists can ride in what is otherwise an emergency lane with cars and trucks passing at 100kms or more. I saw really young kids riding there the other day and all it took was one too fall off and they would be in front of a car and they were not the best riders so I feared this was very possible. How old would your kids be before you let them attempt riding near heavy traffic ?

At least 10.

THAT sort of traffic... NOT good.

I'd barely trust myself near it.

Never.... I Wouldn't even ride there my self.... Its way to dangerous... is it only selected highways/freeways in Perth that you can't take a bike on there?? I thought Tonkin was one of them.. maybe not

Yes I thought all of the tonkin was bike free but when I saw the kids riding there in the lane it is then i noticed the bicycle lane markings. The freeway and leach both have cycle paths all the way along them and the roe has too it makes me mad that they don't do the same on the tonkin if ppl want to ride there.

Wow! That is really dangerous, did these kids have adult supervision or were they just by themselves? If by themselves, thats a shame

What age would I let my kids start riding bikes near that sort of traffic? NEVER! I don't want my kids riding bikes near ANY traffic without me, and certaintly never near a highway, only takes a second for something serious to happen.

Not even I would drive alongside a highway, I'm even too scared to pull up on the side of the highway in a car, the other night we had to pull up as my sisters car in front of us ran out of petrol and that was scary enough.
