Hello. I'm just up the road in North Fitzroy, moving to a new house in Eltham next year. I've been here 2 years. Where abouts are you from? I was born in Cornwall and raised in West London, then lived in Brighton, Dundee and Bath. I seem to have trouble settling in one place; but I'm trying to settle down here in Melbourne. What brings you here?

Hi

I am from Guernsey, Channel Islands. I am here for a few months with my husbands work. I have a 13 month old daughter.

What do you think of this area ? Is there much to do ?

I have friends from there - lovely place to live. Kew is also nice. There are good shops/cafes etc in Heidelberg, Northcote, Richmond and Clifton Hill. Your local child and maternal health nurse, [health visitor], will have playgroups arranged and there are other independent ones all over.

Nice places for small people include the zoo, [great butterfly house that's warm on a chilly day and the butterflies are huge and land on you], the aquarium, Melbourne Museum, [full of toddlers on Sundays], the St Kilda sea baths, [heated, filtered indoor sea water pool], Werribee safari park, [there's a baby hippo], the Observatory cafe in the Botanical Gardens, [fabulous lunches next to the Ian Potter Children's Garden], the Queen Victoria Market, and the rock pools in Williamstown. If you feel like venturing further I'd recommend Daylesford and Olinda much further, Jindabyne, [long way!], as lovely little towns for trips out. The drive to Olinda is pretty and there is a nice place for lunch with a big open fire up there in the hills.

Thanks singlepregnantchick for all the info. I will definately check them out.

Do you feel happy here in Melbourne ? How are things going for you ?

I think I am going to like it when I settle in and find my way round. My husband takes the car to work, so we have to rely on walking. I must get used to using the trams so I can get around.

That's great to know you have friends in Guernsey. It is a lovely place to live, but you get a bit of shock when you come to a huge place like Melbourne.
