Okay, so she's 22 months now, but she was my firstborn, and I've never really told her story, and I feel quite proud of the birth. I think I did quite well for my first, and can't wait for my second. Mods, feel free to delete this if it's not 'recent' enough to feature in Birth Stories.
I found out I was pregnant January 2006, and my partner and I were very excited. Scared, but excited! I have naturally large hips so I was confident of my ability to have a good natural birth, and you'd think I was the first woman to ever get pregnant, that's how I strutted around and threw my belly out.
We chose the name Scarlet-Rose because we loved the name Scarlet, and my little sister begged me to put 'rose' in the name somewhere.
They found out that my body absorbes iron 98% faster than normal, so I was pumped full of iron tablets, and each time they upped the dose, tests still came back saying that I had critically low iron levels. Despite my 5-times-a-week red meat diet {I love meat}, and the huge doses of iron, my iron levels didn't rise at all.
Then they informed me that Josh's blood group was incompatible with mine, so I'd need 3 injections in my butt. {forgot what it's called}. Ohhh boy. I'm the biggest needle freak ever. Say needle and I cry. I'm trembling even typing needle. Despite having full body tattoos, I'm a needle sook.
I also have grand mal uncontrolled epilepsy, and I had to be supervised 24/7 because the only medication that controlled my epilepsy, surprise surprise just my luck, would also cause an instant miscarriage once ingested.
So during the birth I had to be strapped down in case I went into a seizure and crushed her head in the birth canal.
Come due date, goodbye due date.
Two weeks later I hadn't slept for 72 hours and they decided to induce me in case the lack of sleep enticed my brain into a seizure.
They asked me if I could try to have sex, as that would help to induce me. I was a bit shocked, as we hadn't stopped having sex at all! I thought they were saying that I wasn't meant to have sex while pregnant, so I panicked, but they assured me that not many mothers want to have sex during pregnancy. Hell, if anything, I wanted it more! We were having sex every night, and the doctor said that was great, it only meant my vaginal muscles would be nice and strong for the birth, which really embarrassed me.
They inserted a tampon-like cotton swab soaked in an inducing liquid, and left it in overnight.
8:00 the next morning, they came in, and said: "Time to have your baby!". Whhaaa????
I wasn't ready, for one thing I hadn't even finished the page in my book.
So I settled myself back, and they prepared to break my waters. Before they could, they broke by themselves, and they flooded all over the bed, and flowed onto the floor.
The first pain started, and it wasn't as bad as I had expected. The nurse asked me if I needed anything for the pain, and I refused. It wasn't bad enough to need relief, besides, I'm massively stubborn and wanted to see if I could do it naturally.
Before an hour and a half was up I was fully dilated and they asked me to move into a pushing position.
I could feel her tiny hairy head between my legs and I gasped: "She's a slimy hairy lump!"
I wrapped an arm around Josh's neck, and said: "Want to give me a hand?". The nurse started laughing and then encouraged me to push.
I took a deep breath, mentally told myself to stop whining and get it over with {I'm a bit harsh with myself}, and bore down with all my might.
The shoulders coming through felt like I was splitting sideways, but I wasn't *thankfully*.
Then her body rushed out with a feeling like a heap of oily sausages coming out of my vagina. Ewww, right?!
3 hours total, no pain relief, no stitches, and the nurses told me it was the quietest birth they'd ever heard.
I was so proud of myself, that all the things the other new mums were complaining about, I wasn't having trouble with. I didn't get mastitis, I had no pain going to the toilet, I didn't bloat, I didn't bleed and I was back "in bed" {if you know what I mean, wink wink} the night I returned from hospital.
My sister, who had a very hard labour, told me during the birth that I was just showing off .
She was 10 pounds, 54 cms. Very pale, a shock of bright red hair {Josh and I are both blondes, so that was a surprise!}, and blue eyes.
Scarlet-Rose suited her so well.
I hope my next one is as uneventful and quick!:yelclap:
Thanks for listening to my story!!
