View Full Version : Why is it so weird?

Why do people think its so weird for me to express some milk to give my 3-year-old on her cereal? She's cow's milk protein intolerant and if I don't do that then she has to have rice milk, which is nutritionally FAR FAR inferior. And she's still my child! Just over a year ago, I was still breastfeeding her - why is it so odd that she should still benefit from my renewed supply?! (She now has a baby brother)....

I just don't get it. I don't understand why breastmilk is 'icky' or thought of as being 'wrong' for older children. I don't think I'd actually offer her the breast now - only because it would seem strange for US after a year long abstinence from breastfeeding period - but not because its icky or gross.

Do you not eat any dairy either?

I don't think it's strange. I anticipate that when I have baby number 2 I will offer DS some expressed milk.

Because people will always think its weird when society views bm the way it does.

For whatever reason cows milk is ok even though thats meant for baby cows .... I dont get it either !

Yes Court, Tami's latest bub has issues with milk too sadly.

Nope, dairy and soy free for me :) My son has a CMPI and reflux, so I'm likely to not be eating dairy anytime in the next 2 years or so ;)

Sounds perfectly normal to me....but then I co sleep with both my kids, use cloth nappies, and breastfed beyond 12 months.............clearly I am of the hippy variety and strange things have happened to my brain and it's ability to determine what is normal......

Personally I think anyone is plain weird thinking its odd:rolleyes:.

If I have my next one and DS is still young I'd have no problems giving him my breastmilk on his cereal or in a b!oody cup! Probably wont have to for medical reasons as he's not allergic to dairy at all so what would they think of me:eek:. I think its just the case of people judging what they dont know. I think its great you can give your Daughter you milk!

Do people really think that is strange?

I used to make up my DS1 milkshakes with my beast milk while feeding DS2 as a newborn and then I done the same with DS3 when DS4 was a newborn feeding.

I think it is just clever.

Why is it weird?
Because society has made it that way.

:yelclap: to you...just wonderful.

I wish I had been able to express..I had milk sprayed all over my green lounge from de-latching little bubbas...but when I tried to express- even with my midela double action electric pump, it just didn't happen.

(^oh and now I know how those poor cows feel:laughing:)

I think it's fantastic but the part of my head that's still slightly moulded by society though 'oh weird' when I first read that you put it on her cereal. I had to think on why that was my reaction because it shocked me that I thought that way.

My thought on extended BF is each to their own, not sure I'd be comfortable doing it myself though. So why is it that I don't care if you actually BREAST fed her, but the idea of putting EBM on her cereal was weird to me?

 I think society needs to wake up a bit and so do I, obviously.

Well now that is strange. Just stirring.:p

It's not strange at all... And I really think the rest of society need to acknowledge that.

I don't think it's weird at all and i'm still baffled that others think that it is!

If I could express my breastmilk and give some to DD then I would do so in a heart beat...and she hasn't had breastmilk since she was 3.5weeks old! Sadly though, no luck on the expressing front for me.

She has out of curiosity wanted to drink from the breast like DS does, so I let her...she just licked my nipple and went "MmMMm yumm" LoL she had no idea what to do poor little woman!

~Emmylou~
26-08-2008, 11:14
I dunno why anyone would think it wierd....I still give my nearly 4yo breastmilk in a cup most days. Keeps colds away :D

26-08-2008, 12:20
I dont think its weird at all. I have offered DD some but she doesn't like it. With DS once he is weaned I will still be expressing and putting it in his cups and in his food for as long as I can.:goodvibes:

Agree!! my kid thinks its weird too. I gave him some and he took one sip and gave me such a wtf look!

I bought two cartons of it too, what a waste!

I tasted it and had the very same look;)

P.S I don't think it's weird at all-infact i wish i had thought of it!

Its better for people than cows milk. Whether you are 4 or 40!

If you have it on hand, why not.

I am also told it is sweeter and nicer than cows milk too. :)

I used to do it for DS and put it in sippy cups.
He loved it.

I will be doing it for my DD when this bub makes it entrance too.

I, for one, don't see the downside.
Free, better for you, yummier...

I think it's a great idea, if i could express i'd give DS1 some of my milk too. I might have to try the pump again and see if it works.

I have no idea how you milk rice.

I assume its just rice all mushed down with water..

Maybe I should find out.

Tam-I-Am
26-08-2008, 15:25
Its actually pretty easy - you just overcook rice, then blend it until its all liquid, and then strain it through muslin. Its obviously a bit more complicated than that - but that's the general gist of it.

Thanks for the support guys :) I'm glad that I'm not the only kook in the known world! :p

I don't think thats weird. Summer was breastfeeding off me at 3 so I can't say I think what your doing is odd, I actually think it's great :yelclap:

Yep thats the gist of it ! Its basically rice water in a round about way.

I use cheesecloth though .... Speaking of which i never posted about it will have to do so in the next few days !

Im rather grateful for rice milk as weird as it all sounds cause it means i can cook easily for my boys !

Tam-I-Am
26-08-2008, 18:59
Nah, I don't make my own - I just know how to! :p

Rice milk from the supermarket is modified so that it is protein and/or calcium enriched - which I COULD do at home, but would make it harder. Its pre-packaged and safe from the supermarket, so I'm a bit 'meh' on making my own :)

Nah - I dont know why some people think its weird or wrong. It really does confuse me. I guess if it were your partner drinking it then I might then think THAT were weird - but I put it on my hubbies battle scars and fungal infections all the time (most of the time he's actually ASKING for it cause he knows how good it is!)

Magical stuff. Love it :D Is there anything breastmilk can't do?? :goodvibes:

I don't think there's anything weird about it at all. Nor do I see anything wrong with bfing a 3 year old. I remember seeing a doco ages ago about extended bfing and how the kids who were about 3 or 4, said it tasted better than chocolate.:)

Anyone telling you it's weird needs to be told to mind their own business.

Cat13
26-08-2008, 21:15
Nope I don't think it's weird either!

But I guess the reason why many might is that it just isn't familiar to them. Even my DH some months ago when he asked if I was going to stop BF our 19month DS soon said "he doesn't need it anymore now that he can eat, it's not doing him any extra benefit". Of course I corrected him but I guess that's the general perception out there.

I haven't had time to read this whole thread but I just wanted to say that I think it's incredibly resourceful and innovative of you to do this for your daughter! What a great idea - honestly I don't know if I would have thought of it myself and I'm glad you started this thread because it's definitely something I'll do in the future if we come up with the same problems. Good on you - not weird at all but in fact clever, loving and nurturing parenting.

it's not wierd in the slightest! my boy just turned one (my dd weaned herself at 10 months) and he is a booby boy all the way, i'll feed him as long as he wants it. i think it's a natural and clever solution to your problem :yelclap:

I'm glad that there are people here who not only do the same thing, but also think its a good thing to do!

The funny thing is, when she has rice milk on her cereal, she only eats 1/2 of her breakfast. When she has BM on it - she eats it all AND its better for her! So - I'm going to stop worrying about other people and just do what's best for my girl :)
