No it hasn't. There was talk that the State Government would do it but it hasn't happened yet.

I am originally from down south & think that QLD not having fluoridated drinking water is a pretty big issue!

Some info I recently got from the hospital (although it is dated 06/06/01!!) has the following info:

What QLD water supplies currently have natural fluoride levels of 0.5ppm or above?

Adavale, Aramac, Barcaldine, Bedourie, Birdsville, Boulia, Cloncurry, Corfield, Eromanga, Eulo, Gonuna, Gilliat, Ilfracombe, Jandowae, Julia Creek, Karumba (shallow wells - partial supply; artesian bore - partial supply, unfit for human consumption), Longreach (hot water supply only, not normally consumed), Maxwelton, McKinlay, Muckadilla, Muttaburra, Quilpie, St George, Tara, Thargomindah, Winton.

What QLD water supplies have their fluoride levels adjusted to the recommended range?

The following places in QLD have fluoridated water supplies. The level of fluoride in the water is determined by legislation.

Townsville/Thuringowa, Gatton, Biloela, Moranbah, Mareeba, Dalby.

The remainder of QLD water supplies (over 90%) - including those of Brisbane & South East QLD are not artificially fluoridated.

It then goes on to state what is the recommended dosage of fluoride & when to supplement & how much.

It says that info on the fluoride in your local supply can be obtained from the water dept. in your local government. Any queries relating to fluoride issues can be directed to your local Oral Healh Service, the phone number for which can be found in the White Pages under QLD Health (Dental).

Hope this helps!:D

flouride is really beneficial to childrens teeth and helps in prevention of decay. the governement used to give free flouride drops and tablets to the residents in queensland if you asked for them. i asked a few years ago and was told they aren't doing that any more.

when you go to the dentist and they put stuff on your teeth and tell you not to eat or drink anything they have generally put flouride on your teeth. they will do it unless you ask them not to. adults don't benefit much from flouride in the water as our teeth have stopped forming under our gums so we should have it applied directly to our teeth at least once a year. children can benefit from drinking flouridated water up to the age of 10. studies have shown that children who drink water in a flouride area have less cavities that children who don't. the tiny amount in toothpaste is also good. you can give your child regular adult toothpaste if you gdon't have flouride in the water in your area. the milk/junior toothpaste was brought out mainly for areas that already had flouride in the water so as not to overdose on flouride. (that can have the reverse effect on childrens teeth)

I realise it has benefits for teeth, to a certain extent, but it can be very not beneficial in your system. And most people get enough flouride from the green veg and processed foods they eat. :D

I grew up in NSW where we had flouride in our water. Its never affected me in a bad way at all - in fact, I have immaculate teeth without any fillings etc.
Apparently QLD has the worst dental health in Australia.

Like I said, it may be good for TEETH, but you can actually get really sick from too much flouride. Not your teeth, your BODY which does not benefit from it at all.

gee i wonder why qleensland has the worst dental health in australia? i wonder if it is because everywhere else has flouride and we don't.

even bottled water has flouride in it. but who can afford to buy bottled water all the time.

Fluoride actually occurs naturally in some water supplies. Fluoride is added to water that does not already have sufficient levels of fluoride it make it up. The levels of fluoride added to water supplies intended for human consumption is a safe level.

The benefits of having fluoridated water have been proved to far outweigh the perceived risk of not having fluoridated water.

This is why the majority of water in developed countries has been fluoridated for some time. In fact QLD is one of the very few areas of the developed world that currently does not have fluoridated water in all available drinking water supplies.

what are toxic levels that are harmful to your body and what are the le els you get in food and what are levels you get from drinking water that has flouride added? i would be curious to hear about this.

Couldn't tell you the amount that is put in the water supply, but 5g of fluoride will kill an adult.
I think the fluoride from food is actually from the insecticides sprayed on the food.

Amounts of fluoride occuring naturally in drinking water supplies varies, but safe levels can be 0.5 PPM (parts per million) or above.

The recommended dosage of fluoride added to water as a supplement varies depending on the level of fluoride already in the water & on the age of the person.

The Australian Dental Association recommends that fluoride supplements for children under 4 years of age should only be offered if no alternative form of topical administrations is appropriate for the child.

If your local water supply has more than 0.5 mg/litre of fluoride in the water, no supplement is necessary.

If your local water supply has 0.3-0.5 mg/litre the following dosage is recommended:

6m-4 years nil
4-8 years 0.25 mg/day
8-14 years 0.5 mg/day
For water supplies with fluoride in water of below 0.3 mg/litre, the following dosage is recommended:

6m-4 years 0.25 mg/day
4-8 years 0.5 mg/day
8-14 years 1.0 mg/day

To find out the level of fluoride in your local water supply, contact the water dept. of your local government.

The list goes on. And before anyone comments that these are not medical sites or government health sites, as if they would go against something that they are paid off to do - fluoride is a waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry - the expensive alternative is pharmaceutical grade sodium floride and is more of a natural occuring fluoride - however the one they want to put in our water supply and currently do is the cheap waste product.

Anyway, my 2 cents worth - believe who you want to believe!!

And on a side note, Qld dental decay is higher possibly due to the cost of dental work - perhaps we have more low income families up here and the fact that there are more isolated and rural populations in Qld that don't have access to dentists:

The reason oral health is so poor has a lot to do with the way dental services are funded in Australia. There is no Medicare rebate applying to dental services, and no widespread public dental hospital system. Instead about 90 per cent of dental services are provided by the private sector, with the patient paying a fee for each visit. http://www.abc.net.au/health/regions/features/dental/

There is difference between the effects of the topical application and the ingestion of fluoride.
Personally I am opposed to mass medication of a population, wherin the recipients have little or no choice and the dosage is not regulated.
For those who wish to ingest fluoride, it is available for them at the chemist. For most people however, proper dental hygiene is sufficient for adequate protection against tooth decay.
What else should be put in the water for our benefit? should we be dosed with iron? many of our population are iron deficient.......
perhaps we should be dosed with soma *wry smile*
