Hello fellow pregnant ladies!
I am nearly 26 wks pregnant and over the past week i have had a huuuge craving for sugary foods all the time.
I can usually handle the cravings, but they are getting so strong and I am giving in! I have eaten about 1/2 block of choc, 3 muffins and half a fruit cake this week! not to mention ice cream EVERY NIGHT and soft drink (which Im usually not a fan of.)
I have started drinking diet soft drink if i need to, but i just cant stop the other treats. I have already put on 10kgs! and thats just in the second trimester, I put nothing on in the first.
Can anybody help me please??? Im used to craving fruit and salad but thats just about gone out the window.
I have also been suffering a bit of depression which may be linked, any ideas?

Hi there
I'm 24 weeks and also having sugar cravings. Just kicked in this week. Usually an apple would be enough for me but now I'm having HUGE cravings for dark chocolate. Actually I have had so much bad food this week its not funny. :p I want soft drink too but make do with juice - at least it has some vitamins in it. Tomorrow I will make some really yummy apricot and almond balls that are quite healthy so I don't put my hand in the lolly jar!!
I'm not much help really am I :laughing: I guess what I am trying to do is choose the best of the bad things IYKWIM ie 70%dark choc, juice not soft drink, make my own fruit muffins and other treats instead of buying them.
If you have a read thru the due in december threads you will see that quite a few of us are serious chocaholics so you are not alone :D I just think it the stage of pregnancy that we're at and hopefully it will pass.
GOOD LUCK!
I know how you feel. I'm 24 weeks and I think I'm going to give birth to a jelly baby I have eaten so much sugar!
Instead of soft drink, I mix juice and soda water. Tastes good and is fizzy if that is what you are after! I cant have artificial sweetners as they give me vertigo and migraines, so I wont even have chewing gum now im preg.
I am terrible and havent really tried to curb mine, I bought some cocoa pops, as I thought that would be better than eating large amounts of actual chocolate. We also make sure we have bananas in the house to have with icecream, so we dont eat as much of it.
Perhaps you could try and eat fruit before you get sugar cravings. I find cold tinned peaches go down really well, and once something goes down well, I tend to want to eat heaps of it. mmm now I want tinned peaches!
:hugs: I had put on 5kg at my last appt (at 22 wks) and were all put in the 2nd trimester, and I am very scared to be weighed again on monday!
I have bought a really thick and rich organic plain yogurt that I have with fruit at night - it is sweetened with honey and is absolutely delicious. It has stopped the night time sugar cravings.
I am still hopeless with a lemonade or fanta in the day - can't seem to stop myself! Fruit juice with soda water is such a good idea too I will have to borrow that one!

If you really did want to stop the sugar cravings it's well documented that cinnamon reduces and/or stops them completely. There are cinnamon caps at the healthfood stores, {There is nothing else in the capsules just cinnamon} or regualar spice variety taken each day about 1/4-1 teaspoon daily should do the trick.

Oooh does a cinnamon donut have the same effect?
Sorry I am only joking. I never knew that about cinnamon I am going to give that a go.

Thanks ladies!!!
I will try all those things! I like the cinnamon idea too.
good luck to have the will power to turn down your hormonal cravings:laughing:
sometimes your body might be craving sugar coz it might need a bit, so dont be too hard on yourself;)
i understand how you feel my WHOLE 1st pregnancy i craved grapes, mandarins and OJ over everything, and i would eat endless amounts of egg salad sandwiches.
this pregnancy however, has been shocking, i mean icraved a apple here and there but i wanted pastrys, chocolate, coke and take away and there was no stoping it:devil6: i still had healthy dinners though, just ate cr@p thoughout the day:D

Figure out when your worst sugar cravings are, count back a few hours, and eat this:
1/4C rolled oats soaked in enough water or apple juice to cover, for about 30 mins. Add half a chopped up banana, half a granny smith apple (grated, skin on), a drizzle of honey, a good sprinkle of cinnamon, and a dollop of natural or vanilla yoghurt to taste.
This is not only good for you, but actually keeps you full for longer, and keeps your blood sugar level for ages. :-)
I have GD and found double D lollies at Wollies. They have no sugar and taste really great. I have them for a treat every now and then
Me too. I'm shocking with the sweet stuff at the moment and I'm 21 weeks. My other three pregnancies I just craved cake but it had to be a particular sort and then it wasn't all the time but this time OMG it is Fry's Turkish Delights which I never normally eat, ice cream, chocolate, cakes (any) and lemonade.:o An I get real cranky if there isn't any Turkish Delight in the house when the cravings hit.

I think I might give that a go because I feel like this is getting out of control. I'd never heard that one got to be worth a go.
