Hi

A recent thread about smacking has got me thinking more about how dp and I are going to parent our little one (now 6 months) in regards to discipline etc. My parents (well dad) was quite rough with us kids growing up (belt etc), and I think all that really achieved was that we were sh** scared of him, and we simply got sneaky. So I know what I [B]don't[B] want to do. While I'm not against the odd smack, I'd like to also to educate myself about other effective methods....

So my question is, does anyone have any books they can recommend, or know of any parenting course dp and I can attend together?

My day care centre is running a parenting program called the triple P and its run throughout Oz, so I would check with your CHN and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck and I think its great your planning ahead and wanting to be the best parent you can be !!!:fingerscrossed:

I've heard people raving about the triple P program and how great it works.

I'm going to a program run by Centacare (Catholic education thingy) called 1,2,3 Magic. How to get your children to LISTEN not just HEAR without threats, bribes, or smacks.

Will let you know how it goes ... I start on Thurs!

There are Queensland based parenting courses, clinics, an in-home help listed here: http://www.bubhub.com.au/servicesparentingclinicsqld.shtml There is info there for TripleP too, and a link to a website.

And can I just say how great I think it is that you're looking to arm yourself with information! :) What great parents you will be. :yelclap:

Ditto to what MarthaM said! :yelclap: And here's a book list:

The Baby Book - Sears, William and Sears, Martha
Parenting by Heart - McKay, Pinky
100 Ways to Calm the Crying - McKay, Pinky
The Natural Child - Hunt, Jan

If you're looking for online info, google "Attachment Parenting" :)

zactyl, what a great booklist!

Maddysmamma, I recommend those books too. Particularly anything by Pinky McKay. In fact, right now, if you google "Pinky McKay" you can get started by reading some great articles online.
