View Full Version : Maternity Clothes
Hi Ladies
Just wondering whether anyone else has found that the majority of maternity clothes out there are aimed at older women, by saying this I mean the styles just aren't for young people! Sh_t... I'm digging a deeper hole here, but you know what I mean!!! :ecomcity:
I want to buy some nice jumpers etc for winter as well as some nice shirts although I can only find ugly ones in HUGE sizes or maternity ones that aren't really my style and it's really frustrating me! Why can't Billabong come in maternity :crying:
Just wondering what everyone else wore during their pregnancies ???

I know its sounds a little silly...but from the time I was about 25 weeks pregnant I use to wear my short stretchy spaghetti strap dresses as tops...I found them to be perfect to cover my tummy & my big boobs at the time....I got comments from pregnant women saying "where did you get that top from?" and when the weather was a little colder I would wear a long kitted black cardigan that went below my bum and I would leave it open at the front...My little baby bump would poke through which was so cute :D As for pants I bought a couple of (one size larger) hipster pants with stretchy waist bands and they fitted comfortably under my tummy...

i wore my normal pants which were hipsters undone with a belly/hipster band that i got from the wearhouse for fashion for $10. you couldn't even tell that it was undone. my mum made me some skirts with elastic waists and i brought a couple with drawstring waists. i did buy a couple of the glamourmom tops and a freshmums top too. they can be a bit pricey but i feel they are well worth it as you can wear them during and after pregnancy even if you have finished breastfeeding. oh and i had one of those poncho type jumpers for when i felt cold.

God, I must be old, because I thought all the maternity clothes out there last year were for the young things, and all I bought was a couple of button up shirts, and just used the things I had from 5 and 15 years ago!

Luckily, the fashions at the moment are quite flowy - this means they are quite adaptable for pregnancy. I have a lot of body stockings from cotton on, strappy floaty tops from billabong, Dotti, and sportsgirl and a few nice pairs of hipsters in a larger size that sit well below the bump. I have a few jackets which I wear over the top and leave open. You can make outfits look more modern by accessorize with nice belts, beads, scarfs and that sort of thing. Also check out maternity jeans like YIM distressed jeans and Belly Button combats/cargo pants, and also juicy couture maternity

When I was pregnant it was summer... or felt like it... LOL so I wore lots of Empire line style tops. What's good for winter are nice long jumpers and cardigans. I didn't wear maternity clothes until at 33 weeks, Mum had enough of me looking like clothes didn't fit (I couldn't be bothered with clothes anymore!), so she bought me a black top from Pumpkin Patch. LOL

lol maybe I dress old then cos I love the maternity range in pumpkin patch and theres a few 'ebay stores' that sell cute maternity tops with logos like 'baby on board' and 'ingredients to make a baby' etc that I liveeee in!
Whats out now is brilliant even compared to 4 years ago when I was pregnant with zach! Back then... ARGH!
thanks everyone for your replies - especially littlepickle :smiliedance:
i'll have to go into my fave shops and just buy larger sizes!!

You're welcome:D I am such a clothes junkie!! I trawl through all the fashion mags to try to find new ideas that can be adapted but then again, I am a shopping addict!

I dont have a tummy yet but when i do start to get one im just gunna go to my usual stores around town and just buy things that are tight under the bust and then just sorta flow out - if you have a Supre store nearby there are heaps of these style tops out at the moment. You should be able to find heaps of free flowing belly tops in any shop, as they have been quite fashionable for ages:D
As for jumpers... i'd say try cartigans? mum has told me they are great. And there are some really cute ones out at the moment. But i agree on the billabong thing.... thought they would have brought out a maternity range by now... perhaps the owners of the company might read this thread lol...doubtful!
Also, when the time is right im going to invest in some simple black maternity pants from kmart - they have the stretchy waist (ive looked and there is a couple that are simple but still quite stylish!) and i will live in them i think:D
I should add... i too find the maternity section quite yucky! The styles can be very boring at times.... just cause we are "big" doesnt mean we have to wear ugly clothes!!!
Good luck with finding something
I found the same thing when I was in Darwin. They only had one maternity shop which I did buy one pair of pants for work at, but otherwise I felt that all of the fashions were for "older" mums. Instead all of my maternity clothes came from Pumpkin Patch, which I found catered for younger mums quite well.
This time round in Perth, there's a couple of good shops especially Maternity Girl which is an outlet shop. I bought a pair of 3/4 length denim jeans there for $40 as they didn't have button holes (easy fixed) - they were really from Mother and Me which is a good shop but a bit expensive (that's why I went outlet).
i have a pair of thai fisherman pants they are great as they are one size fits all and have a baggy leg look so no matter how big i get i can live in them  i need a few tops though  i have a few nice skirts that i live in as well one was given to me when i was pregnat with DS and one i brought off ebay and one i got from target
yay, another preggers lady in fishies! I have about 10 pairs of these-from before preggers days- and they are great hey!! I live in them also! I find that alot of the bigger sizes are at the factory seconds shops- I wandered into the Supre Warehouse here- everything is about an 8th of the usual price- and I found HEAPS of long stretchy singlets...
Im just havig trouble finding a jumper that will go over my bump!!
Im definatly not a fan of maternity clothes- everything Ive looked at has been pretty disgusting.

Every now and then pumpkin patch or myer get some nice pants and jumpers I found when having my youngest.
Have you tried Ebay?
I would buy alot of my clothing from my usual places just a few sizes bigger!
YAY - i thought i was the only one out there that found maternity clothes EXTREMELY ugly or just WAY to big.. i am only petite and these clothes are just massive.
I have been ok with most of my pants so far, i mean they dont do up but i can still get the zip done, but as soon as i cant i think i will just buy bigger sized hipster pants from valley girl or somewhere cheap and hopefully they will get me through..
As for tops i have found singlets are a winner with a shrug etc, hope it will last the whole pregnancy
jessi - what are fisherman pants? they sound good but i just have never seen them i dont think!
I got my first pair of fishermans pants from Just Jeans when I was pregnant with my son. I think they actually look better on me when pregnant. I also bought a pair of the yoga pants from Jeans West that someone started a thread about a few weeks ago.
I find so many things dont' work on my bottom half as maternity pants don't seem to be in the right proportion (except for my favourite 3/4 length ones), and the fact that I don't have a waist this time. Last pregnancy it seemed to all be in my hips and thighs, this time it's so much more in my stomach area!!!

Leesha, I see that you are in Brisvegas. I bought some maternity clothes at Mamma's House, it's in the shopping complex at Windsor, next to Mummabubba. They have great funky stuff there, a bit expensive, but you could buy a few pieces and sell them on ebay when you are finished. I also bought some Metalicus tops, they have tons of stretch to them and are of excellent quality. Such great quality in fact, I can wear them now that I am not pregnant anymore, that is how well they have bounced back. Maiocchi in the Valley sells Metalicus.
You can also get some great stuff from ebay, I bought lots of skirts as it's easy to get them to fit.
Good luck and happy looking funky  .
ps I am very old, but hopefully still a bit hip, and I think your diplomacy is hilarious :yelclap: .
