View Full Version : What to do when the kids grow up??
Hi all SAHM's,
Just wondering if everyone else worries about what they are going to do when the kids grow up and no longer need full time care??
I still have a few years to think about it, but it is always in the back of my mind. Do I go back to work?? Will I even be able to get a job?? Do I study?? Do I do volunteer work?? Do I start my own business?? (If so, what?) Will I be to busy to do any of this because I will be so busy helping at the school and driving the kids from one activity to the next??
What do you think?? What are your plans for the future??
Jinx, I have been pondering this one too, as my last one will be at school in 2008. As I don't want to put the children in care after school or during the holidays I figure that I have 3 options:
1 - work at a school
2 - casual after hours work
3 - work or business from home.
Option 1 is the most attractive at the moment so my plan is to make myself indispensible at school - parent help, excursions etc and look out for an integration aide course.
Also considering doing a bookkeeping course as I figure this might be something I can do from home.
I was a reg. nurse BC but don't want to go back to that.
I would be interested to hear of other SAHM plans as well.
I look forward to one day earning my own money for a change ;)
But I want to just do something I am passionate about, and take my time about it....I want to become a doula and maybe even if I am motivated become a midwife.... so I refuse to go back to a desk job!
My husband is 11 years older than I, and whenever he gets worried about having enough money after he retires, I keep reminding him that I have some good working years in me still to come
i think i will enjoy doing something just for me..
I want to wait until my last baby is at least at high school
before I do anything full time.
I want to be available to my children.
I would like to go to school
and study lots of differnt things
Probably be too old to work though
Volunteer lots
I hope to have at least one grandchild by the time my last baby grows up!?

I'm planning to start Uni next year or mid this year, by the time my degree is finished of almost finished my youngest child ( we will be trying for our 3rd end of year) is in full time school, I can go into the workforce part or full time depending on how I go!
I want to study to become a midwife, so I'm planning on starting uni in probably 3 years time. I'm lucky that DF is earning enough so I don't have to go back to work anytime soon

i want to do a photography course. i spend hundreds of dollars on photos of my girls so i may as well learn to take amazing pics of them! :)
but i wont be working/studying till my youngest is at school and even then it would have to be through school hours.

You should go to a Tafe or Uni and ask to speak to a career councellor!! they are great!

I was going to study part time at uni and finish my degree when my bubby started prep school, that way I still have time to be there for him. We are coping alright on one wage but my dad is already on my back saying I have to go back to work now. My boy isn't even 1 and a half yet and my dad doesn't stop it. I am not putting him in child care, I refuse to do that. Also I would like to have a second baby not too far down the track. Anyway that is my plan and I am not going back to work anytime soon.

I'm looking into doing teaching, or teachers aide course either mid year, or starting next year. (studying that is)

I want to be a teachers aide, but by the time I will be able to do that, I will be 39. :( I have no training in anything, no qualifications in anything, I've never "worked" before so I don't like my chances. Last time I checked, TAFE only have teachers aide course in Sydney and I refuse to leave my family to do it.
how about doing it by correspondance?? I thought for me, teaching (or some form of it) is about the only thing I could really do, I have been a SAHM now for 14 years. (had bubs at 19, pretty much straight out of school did a 12months secretarila trainesship, but thats worth nothing!)

I thought about doing it through Thompson Education direct, but when I last looked into it, it was going to cost over $1000. But I might look into it a bit more when Matthew gets older.
