I am going to return to work to do the odd day here and there, and although I primarily breastfeed, I am considering giving my bub formula while I am at work. I have not looked at tins of formula, and I also intend to ask my CHN, but I am wondering what formula has worked best for all the mums out there, and how much I should make up? I know I probably sound a bit clueless, but I presume I just get her to have a bottle at the times I would normally have breastfed her, but how much should I give each time? She weighs 10kg, so is it as simple as say, making up 3 bottles of 200ml each and allowing her to take what she needs, as she will still get her 5am and 8am and then 5/6pm (and whatever night feeds she decides she needs) feeds from the breast??

the amount of formula needed is normally based on age...

for the weight of you baby i would assume that she would be on the largest amount which (by most formulas) is 200mls of water, and the required scoops...

also if you daughter is over 12mths forumla is not nessasary, she can have cows milk.

There was another thread recently about the "formula" for bottlefeeding. I believe it was 150 to 170 ml per kg per day. So at 10 kg bub would drink between 1.5L to 1.7L total per day, divided according to number of feeds. Offering 180 to 200 ml per bottle would be a good way to start.

And yes, she'd have the bottles at the time of her usual feeds. Do give it a try before you start work to make sure she'll take the bottle. You may need to have someone else give it while you're out of the room. If she won't accept a bottle you could try a cup with a spout. My daughter, even though she took bottles, took awhile to adjust to the cup as the sucking is slightly different. But I've heard some bubs who refuse bottles will accept cups.

I'll give your advice a go - unfortunately although she used to be fine to take a bottle of EBM, since she started teething, she thinks a teat is for chewing.LOL. Same with a little cup with a spout I also give her for water with meals (to get her used to the idea of a cup). I'll get my hubby to give her a bottle or two in the next few weeks when I am out of the room to see how she goes.
Is there a particular formula best to use, or are they all about the same?

I went thru quite a few formulas until i found one that my DS liked and wasnt to expensive...

s26 didnt fill my son up, lactogen made him sick, karicare he liked but it is expensive, so now i use Heinz which i have found no problems with. and its not to expensive.

All formulas are basically the same, some have more added stuff than others. I used a very basic older one called SMA from 3 or 4 months. It's by the same maker as S26 but an older brand. It's generally cheaper than the others, at 10.50 to 11.50 a tin rather than $18 to $20.

Hi there.

I found Karicare to be wonderful for my little boy....he refused S26 and it also seemed extremely creamy once made up compared to Karicare.
My friend uses Heinz and raves about that too.

my daughter got constipated on S26 but Karicare has worked great for both kids

The lactation consultants at the hosptal said that Karicare goat formula is the closest in consistency to breast milk. I find that William doesn't get tummy pain as much as when he was on S26.

It's a bit more expensive and smells like feta cheese when it comes back up again (which is rare) but Will seems to like it.
