And it said The dilation part is the most painfull.

So I was just wondering how they do it..
I know this is probably a sensitive area for some so I thank you in advance for helping me out!

They will usually give you some kind of anaesthetic beforehand.

I believe they will give you a pill beforehand (I think they put it on your cervix) to prepare it.

It does vary, some places have different policies.

When I had my D&C I was already actively miscarrying so I don't think they had to do anything.

they gave me a pessery to dialate my cervix.

The nurse told me to expect period type pain, so I expected cramps etc, but it was what I normally get as period pain x alot.

I have had endometriosis for many years and have alot of my pain in my back. The pessery caused me extreme pain, I couldn't stand up properly, my husband had to get me back to my bed, and that was before it even peaked. I probably shouldn't tell you all that, it's going to scare you.

To tell you the truth though, they were quick to get me under anaesthetic after the pessery started to work.

Good Luck- hopefully yours isn't painful at all

They use a series of rods of increasing size to dilate your cervix after it has been softened by the prostaglandin pills - they do it under general, though you can request a local (I have had it done under both and would recommend the general if you are squeamish). If you are interested you can find youtubes of all medical procedures. Just do a search for "dilate and curettage" or something.

i was hemorrhaging when i had my D&C and my mind was a little lost at the time but i can remember waking up and feeling no pain, no nothing.
it actually made me feel 'wrong' becuase i felt so good, i thought i would at least be in a little pain considering we had lost our baby and i had lost so much blood.

but i would have no clue what it would be like for you since it for a totally different matter.

good luck, if you need any help with anything you know where i am

When I was in my m/c it was a missed m/c so when I went in they put me to sleep I can only assume that they did have to dilate me but I was asleep so didn't feel anything. I did have some pain after the pain killers wore off it just felt like period pain or after birth.

:iagree::iagree:Same thing happend with me

hi i had a D&C on August 1st the put 2 tablets up behind my cervix the I had to lay down for an hour, the tablets are to dilate you, the I went in for the D&C. The dilation was not painful at all just boring having to lay down for so long.

I haven't had a D&C but had an induced birth after a late missed m/c and I think the tablets are the same (Misoprostol). They didn't cause me pain really, (except the last hour leading up to his birth) just light period-kinda twinges. The worst part was that they gave me bad diarrhoea and made my temp go up to 39oC, and made my blood pressure drop really low. But I had to have 5 doses over 36 hours so I wouldn't think that much would be required for a dilatation for a D&C.

this is what i heard happens too.
I had a D&C after a miscarriage 4 days earlier, but had to take no tablets or any other form of "prep"
