Just a quick question.

I can't remember the rules to do with sea food during pregnancy. What is the rule of thumb with sea food and is anything in particular a no-go-zone?

Any web references would be great.

Thanks!!

i still eat alot of seadfood and i am pregnant.

smoke salmon is a no no. or sushi, anything raw like undercooked fish or oysters.

cooked prawns, fish, squid is all fine!!! just make sure its all fresh. you can tell by things look/smell when you buy them.

frozen is a good way to go!! fish shops always have frozen prawns/squid tubes.

I found this fantastic artical written in the New York Times this afternoon as I was searching the internet for the same thing.

Basically it says that all fish can be dangerous if it has not been handled correctly, this is normally to do with incorrect freezing, bad storage, or because its been sitting in a display cupboard for too long.

Raw fish, such as that found in Sushi has not been proven to be more likely to make you ill than chicken, however you need to be very careful where you buy from. Partly cooked shellfish (oysters, and clams) on the other hand cause 85% of seafood-related illnesses.

My oppinion on the matter is this: If you are 100% sure that the fish has been handled correctly, frozen or fresh, hasnt been left sitting on a pallet for hours whilst being unloaded, and has been prepared correctly (not really an easy thing to be sure of unless you know a fisherman, or go down to the fish markets), the its safe to eat. If you cant garentee its quality and freshness, its best to avoid it, or cook it really well.

Here is the artical that I found: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/15/opinion/15shaw.html?ex=1342152000&en=a30c838e3d0bd7f5&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
