hello all i was hoping someone can help. My wife is pregnant again for the third time. She has has 2 previous miscarriages. We think she is 4-5 weeks pregnant because she has a 35 day cycle, but the doc thinks she is 5-6 weeks pregnant because they take the dates from her LMP based on their 28 day cycle. We had an u/s yesterday on 19/8/08 and doc didn't see a sac. On 12/8/08 her hCG level was 483. On 19/8/08 her hCG level was 2436 but doc thought it should be 4000. She has had a little pink discharge for past 2 days. Doc said can't see a baby so it must be eptopic or in an "unknown location". He said it's not viable preg because he can't see a sac. He suggests taking medication to absorb baby back into her body (ending the pregnancy). We don't want to do that yet - seems to early to make that choice. We have to have blood tests every 48 hours to check hCG. Has anyone had similar experience where no sac was found at about 5 weeks? Is 4 or 5 weeks too early to see sac?

I don't have direct experience to go by to give you advice but I think you are definitely right in saying that it is too early to take the medication suggested. Especially given that your wife has longer cycles than usual so she might not be far along with the pregnancy at all. I would continue on with the blood tests to check that the HCG is rising as it should. But I would also be investigating whether the pregnancy is ectopic as this can be dangerous for the mother. Fingers crossed everything works out for you both. :fingerscrossed:

I wouldn't take the meds it if were me!
I could be completely wrong, but I had a scan when I was 8 weeks & I'm sure they warned me that they may not be able to see anything yet....
I'd wait a couple of weeks & see if they'll do another U/S... or keep getting bt done...
Fingers crossed!!!:babydust2:

Hi

My neighnour had a similar experience where they were unable to locate the sac. It turned out to be etopic and she had one of her tubes removed as it had burst. The baby was eight weeks at this stage.

If it was me I would wait another week, and if it was still not located, I would consider the medication.

That's just me though! I hope they find it, good luck:fingerscrossed:

I had spotting at 5 weeks and they did an U/S and found no sac. It turned out to be an ectopic and they had to remove my tube. So i would definately try to find out if it is an ectopic because they are extremly dangerous if not found.

But as far as the medication if you are not 100% sure on taking it I wouldn't. Can you get a second opinion ? or as the other girls have said leave it a few more days.

:hugs::hugs:to you and your wife

The same thing happend with my neighbour, they found it in the tube when they went in for a look. The docotors were baffled why they were unable to see it too.

Hopefully they find it... I have heard positive stories too about the baby being found safe. Sending you and your wife lots of :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

I think you should get a second opinion. Maybe get another scan, get monitored closely for the next few weeks or go to the hospital and tell them your wife has a suspected ectopic and they will do all checks on her because ectopic could be life threatening. I have had an ectopic pregnancy. My symptoms was intense pain in the stomach and bleeding. I ended up with a burst right tube and had it removed.

Lots of :hugs: to you and your wife.

If you are right about the dates then it will be too early for sure - so keep being monitored and possibly look for another Dr. I am not sure about the idea of meds even if it is eptopic....

Hi there - I'm so sorry to hear about what you and your wife are going through.

Sadly I've been there twice before. The first time I had an ectopic pregnancy in my left tube which was picked up on ultrasound and surgically removed.

The second time, my hcG levels were rising (at about the same rate as your wife's) but also like your wife, no sac could be found. Not even in the tube.

It turned out that it WAS in the tube - but it was a cornual ectopic pregnancy. This meant that it was in the edge of the uterus - kind of in the 'doorway' between the uterus and the tube. Unfortunately this one ruptured and I was in a lot of pain - both emotionally for the loss of another baby, and physically.

I dont want to alarm you unnecessarily - but you've described my story and I'd hate for another person to go through what I did. I was having blood tests every second day to check the amount that my hcG was rising and scans every 3rd day to try to find that sac.

If after 3 ultrasounds the sac has still not become visible and her hcG levels continue to rise then I would strongly suggest that you present to the emergency department and demand medical attention.

However - since you have been given the option of methotrexate (the shot that would 'dissolve' the baby) then I would also suggest that you wait until 3 ultrasounds haven't been able to see the sac. I was never given the option of methotrexate - and in hindsight, if I had been given the option I do understand the hesitancy in taking it. The repercussions of losing a tube are really minimal in comparison to the emotional trauma of 'aborting' a baby...

Good luck with your decision. If you and your wife would like to chat more, feel free to PM me.

I just wanted to post a happy ending to my story!!!

These ectopics both happened a year before I conceived my son :) He is now 15 months old and we had an 'accident' and are expecting #2 in Nov/Dec. So even with one tube you can still fall pregnant naturally and go on to have a family

That's such fantastic news - congratulations. And very good news that you decided not to take the medication they suggested, as it was just too early to do so.

Wishing you both a safe and successful pregnancy.

What about an internal scan? (ie through the vagina.) these scans are usually clearer. I would not take the meds either but would insist on a follow up scan.
