I got some flack today from my mother (thanks mum!) about the fact that I haven't had DS weighed for about 8 weeks. Is that really really bad? I know he's growing, he's thriving! do I HAVE to have him weighed often?

oh, and no, I don't see a MCHN, I did twice at 4 weeks and 8 weeks but not since. I just don't see the need for it and everytime I have (with DD and now with DS) I leave feeling horrible and it takes days to get myself back 'together'

how important do you think knowing how much your bub weighs is?

Im the same I havent had bub weighed since 8 weeks.
In all honesty I dont think its that important if you can see they are gaining weight etc and have no medical problems

i had dd weighed a little more frequently when newborn, only as she was tiny and her pead asked me too, she was weighed every week for a month. After that shes been weighed at 4months, 6 months and i will do the 12 month one. Thankfully my chn is pretty nice although she did push the solids thing at 6 months and i told her i wouldnt be starting till she was ready (8months it was) and she sorted of rolled her eyes.

I know that shes gaining weight, if i had scales at home i would do it myself :) i like to keep a record only so i can compare with the other kids plus its nice for her little book that each of the kids have, photo albumn type thing.

If you know ds is gaining weight and his healthy unless you want to keep a record of numbers then its totally up to you :)

In all three of my kids I've only once been to see an mchn and that was to get the #3's heel prick test done so I didn't have to go back up to the hospital (5mins away as opposed to almost 40mins). My almost 10mo is probably about 10kgs at a guess but I don't know for sure as I haven't weighed her for probably 7-8 weeks but then she certainly isn't a shrinking violet.lol

I get them weighed at the standard checkups and then if I want to know I weigh them or if I have to give them something (ie panadol) I will weigh them then to be accurate but otherwise no I don't really weigh my kids (though now they think it's fun to jump on the scales after mummy does so they are easy to do these days). :)

Hope that makes you feel better about cos I feel slack about it sometimes but have never had any concerns about my kids and their weight/feeding habits so I guess I didn't see the point in it.

You shouldnt have to answer to anyone about whether or not you weigh, especially when you can see they're growing.

I do the same with DS as I did with DD. They get weighed at their Dr's appointments and I take them to one of the large chemists and weigh them myself. I only do it every 3 - 4 weeks in the beginning every few months as they get older.

As long as I can see them growing out of and filling out their clothes etc I know they are growing well.

I haven't weighed my son in months. Both my kids are tall, thin children and I would feel terrible with my DD when she was weighed by the MCH and she would fall into the 25-30th percentile. Then I would get asked how many bottles are you feeding her? :banghead:

I've learnt to trust my gut when it comes to their weight and development. I don't need some chart to tell me they are healthy. ;)

I get DD weighed every 4-6 weeks. I used to do it more often when she was younger as she was a pretty poor feeder so I just liked to know that what she was getting was doing the job. Now, I just do it as a bit of an outing. I love my CHN - she's incredibly caring, non-judgmental, full of great practical advice (although not all I've used) and has eased all of my fears about DD over the last 9 months. I find it really sad that so many people have terrible experiences with CHNs.

When EJ was little I weighed her often cause you could go into the health centre and use their scales which were in the waiting room - plus I got her weighed at check ups. Actually I probably weighed her too much, so started worrying sometimes for no reason lol

Now she's bigger I havent weighed her much - apart from at grandma's on the bathroom scales. I did get her to stand on the scales at the vet also when I was weighing the dog once - I think those are pretty accurate lol

thanks ladies - I needed that! :hugs:

DS is doing great.. he's outgrowing clothes and nappies, I can physically see that he's growing. He's healthy and happy. I KNOW that!

I completely subscribe to the 'trust your instincts' way of thinking, and usually I do... I will from now on, without guilt (well, until the next time!)
