I saw it too, and thought - if people are going to have more than 1 kid, they're going to. If they're not, they're not. No old man telling them to have "one for you and one for your country" is ever going to impact anybody. I agree with Chelle. Idiot.
I just cant believe that he is belittleing (sp?) the memory of the anzacs by saying you should have more kids to 'replace' them. And really the only ones who are going to do what he says are the people who probably shouldnt be having more kids anyway!

Umm, I agree - Idiot! And really, if the government wants us to have more kids, how about a little more help with the cost of living etc?

It's got nothing to do with the government. It has been run by a very rich buisness man, not really sure about his angle about what Australia is going to be like in 50 years with immigration.

I don't see why ANYONE needs to have more kids to increase the population.
I mean, have more kids by all means, but not to build up the population of Australia. There are other countries around the world who are WAY overpopulated...and since we're apparently "under-populated" why don't we just do a trade-off?
I don't really think we should be encouraging people to have heaps of kids...it actually makes NO sense. Examples:
*Our hospitals are in crisis. How could they manage to support even MORE births...?
*We are in a drought. As if we need MORE people to diminish the water supply.
*There is practically NO childcare available...so how are families expected to support numerous kids if one parent has to stay home to look after the kids?
*The price of petrol is insane. It's bad enough carting ONE child around to doctors appointments, sporting events, school, play dates...how on earth could you manage those trips x 2 or more?
Of course, if you want kids, have them. But to ENCOURAGE it? Stupid IMO.

This guy is a extremist trying to place his words carefully!!
That's exactly the impression I got too. I don't understand why people are so afraid of multiculturalism. Australia needs a population boost. Other countires need to decrease their population... Hey, what would be a perfect solution??? I know, let's try to guilt Aussies in to having children they cannot afford to raise!

Considering all the implications of having just one child, let alone more than one, I don't think he's going to sway too many people into having a bigger family.
Perhaps the substantial amount of money he has used to finance this campaign could have been put to better use - helping those who are finding it difficult with their 1.76 children at present!
i always wonder how they can say a person has 1.76 children you either have one or 2

 I want the 3/4 that doesn't need the nappy changed!
Constello yesterday I heard say that people are having one for mum and one for dad.. so then he throws in "maybe they'll have one for the country too!"
*shakes head*
.... not really sure about his angle about what Australia is going to be like in 50 years with immigration.
I was thinking this, too. What's wrong with a bit of diversity? Maybe he is afraid of it. Maybe he is racist? Who knows? Just because we have different cultures doesn't mean we'll lose the things that are traditionaly Aussie.
I think the whole thing is a bit laughable really.
Love,
Nan. xx
you can't force people to populate
though you may encourage
i do realise that without children the economy suffers
children generate wealth, employment and the like
that is all that i will say for now

I'd love to have another one if he'd like to miraculously turn back my biological clock and pay for my IVF treatments.
I know I will get shot down for this but it is not my intention to offend....this is my opinion.
I can see some sense in what he is saying. :o
We are populating at a lesser rate than previous generations, and maybe it is something that will cause issues in the future when my generation is in retirement/nursing homes etc and is relying on the taxpayers to fund health systems and pensions etc (assuming they will still have pensions then, of course). What if there isn't enough people of 'taxpaying age' to accomodate for all the govt will need to supply?
Am I making sense??
I dont agree with the immigration and loss of 'natural Australia' point, however, I think the declinining population may be a relevant point.
That's all I will say about that. Fire away....:D
I'll be doing my part if I manage 6

Kells according to the *do you like the Howard Government* thread when ALP gets into power they will fix all those problems
sneaks away and hides behind a bush........sorry all said with tongue in cheek. I thought we had a smilie with a zipper pulled across the mouth but I couldn't find it so I'll stay behind the bush until it's safe to come out again!!!
Butterfly kisses - No need to hide!! I'm not at all scary!!
Honestly, I'm not that 'passionate' about it - could just see some sense in what he was saying.
All is safe....come out from behind the bush.....you may get sore legs squatting for that long!! :D

Just had a thought...
If Costello wants "One for Mum, One for Dad and One for the Country"...(and surely Costello isn't the ONLY one thinking this way...) perhaps this is one of the reason's some were trying to prevent that "RU-45785675o363" (I forget the numbers so I just randomly pushed heaps...lol) from being available in Australia. After all, having it around may just affect the population even more.
