One person told me it was 125kg and another told me 115kgs. Does anyone know what it actually is and what is your story. Did they try to get you diet or just let you go on in pregnancy and send you elsewhere to deliver???:confused::confused::confused:

I have not heard of there being a weight limit in most general hospitals.

I know there is a 100kg weight limit at the KEMH birth centre, but the actual hospital would most likely not have one.

I know its about the BMI rather than weight, at Werribee Mercy they will only accept you if your BMI is below 40 at booking time.

Ring the hospital and find out.

Me too actually.

Surely all hospitals cannot have a weight limit and then what if there is a pregnant woman over all the weight limits. Does she get refused care??

Seems a bit... Odd to me.

I'm not sure about Peel, but Bunbury Regional has a 140kg weight limit for maternity and SJOG has 120kg. Otherwise if you exceed that, you are required to go to a Perth hospital that caters for maternity patients that weight above their 'criteria'.

I know that rockingham/kwinana hospital's limit is 125kg. If you weigh more than that I think your only alternative is King Edward.
I'm pretty sure it because of the beds they have there...

(I have a few friends from the rockingham area that had that problem, so had to go into perth to have their babies... So I'm assuming that Peel wasn't an option either)

The BMI limit at Armadale was 34 *I think*. If you were over that you had to go to King Edward just because the beds are only made to support a certain weight.

Interesting to hear that about SJOG!! (and relieving)

Casey Hospital in Berwick has a weight limit, Im not sure what though. And if SJOG in WA has a weight limit of 120kgs, does that mean the other SJOG's will too?

if it is an emergency they will assess, assist and then transfer as necessary. they won't refuse to let you in the door.

Hmm but if you are too heavy for a bed.. What then?

I can totally understand that there would be weight restrictions based on the beds. That seems fair.

:iagree:. It must be difficult, especially as some women who already are a little large can put on a significant amount of weight during thier pregnancy. What happens then? If they aren't over the cut off weight at the beginning of pregnancy, but are by the time bub is due:confused:

I was like 94kgs a few months ago, and Im now 30 weeks and weigh 100kgs! I nearly died when I saw that on the scales, however it is all baby and boobs and that, not excess fat. But it does make me wonder because I wouldnt have been refused before. Im worried now, particualry seeing as Im going to SJOG in Berwick. Its the closest hospital to us!

:iagree: It cannot be at all easy.
But again... If the bed can't support them surely they would rather go somewhere that has safe beds.
Wouldn't want a bed to break with you and bub in it!

The other issue is the prospect of complications due to your weight. Not every big woman has issues but the risk factors are higher and they are assessed on that basis. KEMH is the main tertiary hospital that caters for all "high-risk births" as well as other births. Whoever your main caregiver will be assessing you and should let you know if alternative arranagements need to be in place.

:yelclap: Thanx for that. I thought it may have been the 125kg just wasnt sure and have had enough of talking to hospital people for a little while lol. It seems you do have to go to king edward if your too big. Thats a far way for kids to travel to visit extra everyday. I hope to god that i keep up the minimal weight im putting on so i dont have to go. I have a fair bit to go still. No more lolls for me lol.

It does seem that they should have a few beds that do cater for larger gals. I weigh a bit but to look at im not obese or anything. Just dont ask my bmi. Im really tall too.
