It was a while ago but I have never actually written anything down, doing this may help me to “recover”.
Lachlan’s due date was 08/01/2001 and that came and went without much fuss I was HUGE and would go to our local baths to float the hot summer days away.
My husband is 6f8” and on my last Dr app at approx 10 days overdue I said to the Dr “I’m no hero, my husband is a big man (I am not large at all), Please don’t make me go through 12 hours of labour to give me a cs in the end. If you think this baby will be too big let’s make a plan now.” Well he didn’t even give me courtesy of looking at me, just at my notes and said “That’s the way babies come out, why will yours be any different?”…..Ok then….
I was booked into the hospital at 6.30pm for the gel application; I was looking forward to the night stay so I could get some escape from the 38’ days and nights. So I got the gel and the nurse asked me if I wanted a sleeping tablet so I could rest for my big day. I enthusiastically agreed. I took the sleeping pill and was happily in the land of nod from about 10.30 to 12.30 a whole 2 hours, and then the pains in the back started like a bad period pain. I tried to sleep through them but they got steadily worse throughout the night and went all night until DH arrived at 6.30am, the scheduled time for induction. They did an internal and I was all of 2cm what the? I had been up for 6 hours for 2cm!
We met Dr Hardas (no not kidding), in went the drip and we were read the rules and regulations from the midwife, she seemed like a real ***** but she ended up being terrific. Waters broke all clear, great I was ready. After about an hour and a half my midwife didn’t think I was in enough pain so she steadily turned up the dose in the drip until the contractions were about 30 sec apart. As I mention no heroics here and I quickly asked for an epidural (I was determined not to have pethidine I didn’t want to be out of it). So in strolls Miss epidural lady with her student sidekick, Miss Epidural doesn’t like being interrupted by my contractions and huffs and puffs every time she has to take the needle out of my back. She can’t get it in and then uses a mole on my back as her guide! Yes actually stuck the needle through a mole!!! I start getting upset so DH steps up and throws her out! Midwife agrees with us and all I did was look at her and she says “pethidine dear?” I nod she jabs me and then goes off to find another anaesthesiologist and the dr to sign for the peth. Head epidural man called up from emergency and he has a look at my back and remarks that I look like a pin cushion. Get epi in but it only works on one side. Combined with peth I get some much needed rest as now the time is about 3pm. 3.30 the drugs are wearing off, and its shift change my middy doesn’t want to leave but new m/w takes over and kicks her out. I ask for more drugs and she politely declines as I am 10cm.. time to push. Thank GOD I say lets get this done. It’s now about 4pm.
I push, and push there are no drugs now they have worn off and the epi had fallen out of my back. I push for 3 hours before I cross my legs and tell midwife that that’s enough thanks. She reluctantly gets Dr who brings registrar, head nurse and her assistant my m/w and dh all standing there peering up my nether regions for one last push to see if we can see anything…Nothing… Dr, he gets ultrasound machine and says “your baby is too big, you have pushed him into your hip he’s not coming out without assistance and his heart rate has dropped, he is in distress” Well bollocks I hit the roof, between contractions I let abuse fly at whom ever was closest. So of we travel to theatre, where by the time we get there I am begging my poor DH to knock me out. After some umming and arghing a spinal block is administered pain goes away resulting in a much happier me and a more relaxed DH.
DS born at 8.00pm beautiful 9lb6oz arrives with forceps, vacuum and a lot of pulling and pushing. Third degree tear, 30 stitches and a haemorrhoid the size of 2 fingers.
I looked at DH and said I will never do that again, he agrees!
It was a horrible traumatic experience and there are parts I have left out otherwise I would be too long, It took my body 18months to recover from my birth and my mind another year after that. This time now I sit here at 34 weeks, I am happily booked in for an elective caesarean. :yelclap:
