We will be finding out what we are having in a week and half :smiliedance: but if it is a boy we are thinking of having the name Kye (Kye James) I always thought we would spell it 'Kye' but everywhere i look it is 'Kai'. Which would you go with???

Oh, and if it is a girl we will probably call her 'Alissa Jade' or 'Alyssa Jade'. Which one?? Too many decisions!!!!

I'd spell it Kye, especially if you keep seeing it spelt Kai alot, at least then he would know which things were his when he goes to school coz of the different spelling.

I would probably go with Alissa, I know a girl called Alyssa but she pronounces it Al-ee-sa  You could call bub Alissa Jayde...sorry, just an idea, but now you've got another spelling to decide on.

Good luck choosing :)

I'd go with Kye, as otherwise he risks being called Kay, which is lacking in masculinity......

I would spell it KAI... and for the girly babe, Alyssa Jade sounds beautiful!
You have fantastic taste in names! All of those were in our 'top baby names' list! Bodhi's middle name was even James for a couple of hours!
Good luck with it all

hey there just wanted to say i love the name kai and have always liked it i couldnt use it for ds as my best friend has a son called kaia so it wouldve been to similar. The meaning for kai in maori is food so i would personally spell it kye so its a bit different. Great choice though:thumbsup:

My ds middle name is KAI, which means Sea or Seawater in Hawaiian. We chose to spell it this way because my dd middle name is SKYE so we wanted it a bit different to her spelling.
I like the spelling Alyssa for a girl.
Goodluck deciding.

I used to work in a school and the variations in spellings of childrens names was incredible. IMO (and it is only my opinion) please spell the names as simply as possible.
Remember your child will have to spell it out for the rest of their life if it is too unusual. Being a simple girl at heart Kye would work for me as most people spell names as they sound.

If you want an unusual spelling for your girls name, my name is spelled Elissa (as you can see from my username).

I've only ever come across 5 or so others with the same spelling. And it's easy to describe it to people - I just tell them it's Melissa without the M.

Good luck with the choosing:thumbsup:

Thoroughly dislike Kye or Kai.

In NZ, Kai is Maori for food.

Kyle would be nice.

Alyssa (this spelling) is pretty.

If my Kye is going to be anything like his sister, he is going to LOVE his food, so maybe it is the perfect name!!! I also found out that it is Hawiian for 'ocean' too......

Kye and Alyssa.

Kai reminds me of food. But unless you're a kiwi or planning to live in NZ it probably doesn't really matter, so if you prefer that spelling then go for it.

He'd better not visit NZ - he may get laughed out of the country.

Hey Food - yes you!

dont ya think you're being a bit harsh?? after all it is alis baby. she wasnt asking if you liked the name kye, just the spelling.
sh*ts me when people attempt to put you off a name without even realising what they are doing. i know i know its just your opinion but she didn't ask for it.

WTF

How is it harsh?

I used no inflammatory or bad language or made a personal attack.

I said it was Maori for food. As I am Maori (and ex-pat New Zealander) to me, Kai is rather an unfortunate and idiotic thing to name a child. This may have no bearing on name choice but I felt it deserved a mention. The child may have nothing to do, ever, with NZ. Fine and dandy. If I were to use a name that meant certain things in other cultures I would like to know as a point of interest. Incidentally, one of my good friends is named Tara. Means lovely things in other languages but here in NZ it is Maori for female genitalia. Her mother was unaware of this and that is a shame.

Kai means ocean in Hawaiian too. That is nice.

No one has to get their knickers in a knot. I assumed this was a forum. We are talking baby names.

BTW I love my kai too. Kumara and puha.

I have a son who is half Maori his name is Kye, I am Irish and there it means narrow peice of land which I thought was fitting cause NZ is a narrow peice of land.
Just thought you might like to know.
