I have countless children's recipe books that have similar recipes for homemade rusks. Cut slices of bread into fingers, then bake in a slow oven for about 2 hours.

Well, I tried this last night, but the rusks seem as though big chunks could easily break off. I would not have thought this was particularly safe for a young baby just starting out on solids.

Has anyone else made their own rusks? Have you encountered this same problem? What's the deal?

I wanted to make my own as we have a family history of coeliacs disease & wheat intolerance, so my CHN recommended staying away from wheat & gluten for a little while. As I have not come across any gluten free rusks (why is that?!) I bought some gluten free bread to make my own.

Hmm, I wondered the same thing! I do remember my mum making them for my little brother though... maybe she waited till he was older?
Gee, I'm a big help, aren't I!

lol! No it's good actually! I like to know I'm not the only one who thinks these things!

I actually gave DD one today & watched her while she ate it. She really loved it! She mainly just sucked on it until it was a gooey mess so it was all soggy before it broke into pieces. It did in the end break into a few chunks, but I just took those pieces from her straight away. No real dramas.

I'm thinking I might get some rice flour/gluten free flour & make some from scratch. Maybe making little bread log things & baking them in a slow oven... hmmmm........ :chef: :chef:

Wow! You're adventurous...please let me know how you go! My son doesn't have a gluten intolerance, but I would prefer it if he was having wholemeal, rather than white flour!

Like anything you give them to munch at this age as long as you keep an eye on them taking those big chunks all should be fine !
As you said it turns to a gooey mess anyways & they love 'em !
We used to do this once when our bread was getting old & would often smear a little vegemite on them then bake !
Bubs looooooooooooooved them !
Sounds like you know what your doing anyways so go with it :D

Hi all...

My son is intolerant to gluten, when he was younger i would make my own bread mix and bake little 'fingers' with that. If i was feeling lazy, i'd get a gluten free bread mix from woolies (healthy aisle) and do it with that. I also found in warm weather a great little treat was to give him the pineapple core to suck on, messy...but he had an absolute ball!! We have a double whammy with DS being intolerant to gluten and to cow's milk so almost everything in our house is made from scratch...

I make mine out of bread cut into thin slices (including the crusts) and put butter on them and put in the microwave for 2 - 3 mins on high and they harden.

My daughter loves them.

.... us too. on the gluten & cow's milk allergies that is. Also egg & peanut.

I do make our own rusks - really low temp bake of coelic bread until all the moisture is gone.

Aside from the rusks I'm fairly much hopeless when it comes to cooking, but am desperate to find some recipes so my DS can have something other than roast lamb, pumpkin fingers and rusks to eat.

Are there recipes you'd be willing to share?? :chef:
