View Full Version : First Feed
Hi. We tried the first feed today - Farax. But after a few mouthfulls, ds got a pained look on his face then spewed it all up.
Is this normal for a first attempt? Should I wait a bit longer (he is 5 months)?
He's been looking really hungry lately.
As you will see from other posts by me, I am a huge advocate of waiting until 6 months for introducing solids. If he looks hungry give him more formula or breast milk. And if he spewed up the farax, wait a while before offering him anything again. The least allergenic (sp?) food in the world is pear, so maybe try that - it is a nice gentle option for a potentially tender tummy. In answer to your question - no it is not normal to spew up the farax - most probably a sign he is not ready yet.
I started giving solid food to my DD when she is 5.5 months old. She was curious and wanted to eat what we eat. After I introduced her to a new food , I waited for 3-4 days to introduce her to another food. She was eating only 1 or 2 teaspoons a day. Then she started eating more and more everyday.
I would wait for awhile than try again later. Don't expect Farax eats more than a teaspoon a day, and don't be in hurry. This wil take some time.
my dd started on 'solids' at 4 1/2 months because she was begging for it and she was a big girl too, she'd lost the tongue reflex etc etc.
I just wanted to say that when we did try pear she got nappy rash from that so even pear *can* be a problem.
Farex if you read the ingredients actually has a *lot* more additives than the other 2 options for rice cereal. I went for the one with the least number of additives - Heinz 'Baby's first rice cereal" and also Bellamy's organic rice cereal.
I also didn't give nearly as much as what they suggested and also when you mix it up - make it up iwth expressed breast milk or formula (whichever you are using) to start with and make it as runny as the milk - that way for their sensitive brand new digestive system you are not changing the consistency as much but giving a 'test' of the rice etc.
A friend suggested avocado to me because you can mix that with expressed milk to a really running consistency too.
Basically I mixed everything up to a really running texture for over a month which I think helped a lot. Now I am starting her (7 months) on mushy chewable stuff (like finger bits of na-na but it requires close supervision coz she is a greedy guts and likes to shove too much in!
I agree with the other ladies - try again later on.
Thanks - yes, I'll wait a little longer. I also heard that avocado is good to start with.
