hi all

just fair warning to say that sydney southwest private is severely understaffed. they are lovely people, but unless you have family around to look after you, then it can get pretty hairy. i got admitted late on a monday arvo to get induced. they put the gel up there, told that it almost never brings on labour and that i would go into labour the next day after they gave me the other stuff to get things moving. i got sent to my ward room. my partner went home as he had to pack for his trip. not too long after, i started getting very regular pains that came more and more often. i thought i had gone into labour, but every time i got up to see the night staff, they just kept telling me to go back to bed as i needed my rest for the next day. they flatly refused to believe that i could be in labour. the next morning they came around, put me into the labour room, went to give me the stuff to bring on labour, only to find out i was between 2 and 3cm dilated. on more than one occasion, it took the nurses over 20mins to respond to the help button. one of those times my boy screamed himself to sleep because i couldn't move him from the position he was in as my canula had come out of my hand, and my iv was still attached even though it had been empty for about half an hour (it was hooked to the bed, not one of the wheelie things so i was immobile at the time). and it's not like i actually pushed the stupid button that often (not more than twice a day). i had a pretty icky labour (four lots of whole blood, i was unconcious for about two hours afterwards), but instead of the nurses taking my boy for the first night, i got kept up all night and most of the next day, and none of them even offered to pick him up for me so that i could breast feed. it also took five days before someone came to go through the bath routine with me, until then i was wiping him down with wet wipes and even took him in the shower with me once. i was on my own, as none of my family could make it over from interstate, and my partner had been sent to melbourne the day after our son was born. not only that, but every time i took my son somewhere (down to the cafteria or outside for some fresh air), i got the third degree about why i had decide to leave the floor. i can't reccommend this hospital at all. not to anyone, for any reason.

Oh my god!! That's scary.. is this Liverpool private????

This is where I am going... Oh my god!!! I've heard that it's not that good there but that was a few years ago and apparently they have improved...

Oh no.. that's not good news at all.. This is our first child and I really don't want to have a bad experience in labour because of the hospital...

BTW - Congratulations with your Baby BOY!

yep, same place if yours is the yellow building just up from the public hospital. and no, the staffing hasn't changed at all. they are still on roster that changes all the time. there are three staff changeovers a day, and you'd be lucky to get the same staff two days in a row. if you've got plenty of family around, then you should be okay because your folks will make sure you get looked after. i think i just got forgotten about. but if you can find a different hospital, maybe the private rooms in the public ward would be a better option.

congratulations of your newest family member :D

I was thinking of westmean private then it might be far...

Did you have to go to the hospital alot during your pregnancy for check ups???

I guess that's what I'm more concern about in regards to distance.
And it is more convenient for my family if I go to Liverpool private... oh I don't know! Having our admission day on 28/5/06...

no, went to my obstetrician for check ups, and the local ultrasound place for the three i had to have. didn't got the hospital at all except to register and they gave me the grand tour and did the whole chat thing at the same time. as a rule, you generally don't go to the hospital at all for anything other than the actual birth.
this is going to sound a bit harsh, but you have to be happy with the hospital. your family come second. you are putting not just your life, but that of your new baby in the hands of the staff, and if you aren't sure you're going to be looked after, then it's not the best situation. being a new mum is tough on the nerves as it is without worrying about inadequate care.

I gave birth to my son in November at South West Private with Dr Ian Fulcher and I can not rave more about the hospital or my ob. He was amazing through everything and I found everyone but one night nurse BRILLIANT. In my opinion I can not recommend them enough. The level of care was wonderful, assistance and advice were always there even at two in the morning. They have two lactation consulatants on hand most of the time who were both great. I had a very difficult and traumatic birth which resulted in an emergency c-s and my recovery was wonderful and I thank the staff for that.

Sorry to hear about your experience Cinova, that is terrible. But my experience was great. Nine of my colleagues from work have had at least one baby there and five mothers from my mothers group had their babies their and they are all of the same opinion.

no denying dr fulcher is awesome. he was my doc too, and he did a great job. mark, the paediatician, was really good too. glad to hear that you got well looked after. but like i said, maybe i just got forgotten about.

maybe you should pm the other lady i was talking to and tell her about your experience, and let her make a more informed decision. would hate to think that she might miss out due to one very bad experience.

Hi Cinova,

Just to give you an upadte, I phoned my Ob - Dr Zuschmann and he can only deliver at Liverpool so I guess I have no choice but to go to Liverpool private.
Also got the pm from Kate and feel relieved...

Hopefully I do have a godd experience in Liverpool private.

Thanks.
