View Full Version : Questions from First Time Mums
Hi Ladies,
Just thought I'd start this thread up again (we had it in our "Due in July" thread) for a couple of reasons:
1. I found it really helpful back then - and...
2. I need some advice!!
Hope you don't mind!!
Little Sammy is giving me a real time of things at the moment. He's just gone to sleep now after basically being awake and grizzling/crying since 6am. I suspect I may be dealing with Colic, but his other symptoms are green poops (plenty of wees), struggling to burp, "wet" hiccups and small vomits from time to time. He has no temperature and looks healthy enough, he just isn't settling. He is eating well now, after a minor hiccup last week (where he did lose a bit of weight).
Do any of you have any "fail safe" settling techniques that you could share?
Thanks in advance! :flowerz:
 Infacol before a feed is great for helping to get up wind and also after feeding if still in pain and having trouble getting it up try a teaspoon of cooled boiled water, works really well for us.
Good luck the first 3 mths can be so trying :hugs:
Hi m2be
Being a first time mum I wouldn't be able to give any advice on that sorry, but we do actually have infacol here as my mum recommended it. My sister used it with the twins because they had umbilical hernias and suffered from wind really badly.
It says use it from 1 month upwards, we have already given Maddison a couple of drops from my finger before a feed. It did seem to do the trick.
Good luck with it, great idea to start this thread up again. Well done.

Green poo is a bit weird. I have only ever had yellow/orange poos from my kidlets. It could be nothing but maybe you should ask your GP about that one.
Just so you know my dude has random very long awake periods and basically you just have to ride them out. I normally walk around with him on my chest so he can hear my heart beat. I feed him alot - he is always hungry. With DD we used to shove a Dummy in and wheel her around in the pram - no such luck with DS, he wont take the dummy and doesn't particularly like the pram :)
There's heaps you can do to settle them but what works on one wont neccessarily work on the other - and what works today might not work tomorrow so I find I try everything (the things that worked yesterday first ofcourse) and then keep trying the things on teh settling list until something works. Sounds like hard work eh....
All the best
Thanks Ladies for the advice.
I went online and purchased an ebook on settling and found it very helpful. I also had a midwife from "Settle Petal" come and visit and she gave me some great settling techniques.
Sounds like Sam may have been having a "Growth Spurt" which apparently happens between 2-3 weeks and lasts 24-48 hrs where they are very unsettled and grizzly. Just being a first timer, I didn't know.
All good now, had a much better day yesterday and am hoping that will continue!

Hi Fiona,
Im a first timer too. But in relation to the green poo, my mum and nan have told me that this is a sign that they have had bad wind in there belly that day. (i think the midwife told e this too) I have been experiencing colic with DD too. Its very trying i know. :hugs:

great idea to have this thread again - being a first time mum there are SO many questions I have.
What im curious to know is how everyones first few trips out and about with your new baby went.
I am a little anxious about heading out and about with Lili on my own just yet, she is 3 weeks old today but I plan to get out and about in the coming week and I was wondering how it all went for everyone, do you normally feed, change, then take them out when they'd normally be sleeping? Im guessing that would work best as they would be relaxed and tired and be fairly settled.
any tips from experienced mums would be much appreciated!!

yep this is how I like to do it then you know you have a certain amount of time till the next feed and they do tend to be more settled in the pouch/pram:)
[quote=Jasmine2008;2939796]It's a bit hard to describe, but hold bub so that their tummy is against your forearm, and their face is around the inside of your elbow (your hand goes between their legs)
Use your other arm for additional support.
The pressure on the tummy help bring up any trapped wind, and the position means you can rock/swing bub to settle them if they're crying.
Take everything that 'professionals' say with a pinch of salt...its amazing how their opinions (and that is all they are, opinions) vary, it can become quite confusing...quote]
The forearm hold was what i used heaps with my niece. It seems to be easier on my arm some how also.
And i 100% agree with the pinch of salt comment with pretty much any advice your given. With DD1 i was given SO much advice. But when i realised i didnt HAVE to do what everyone said, just pick what suited us best.
As for the first trip out. Full feed and change then set out for the shops. Take at least a spare shirt for yourself as well as normal nappy bag. And the great thing now is most of the big shopping centres have really great parent rooms for feeding and changing if you need them.

Having 2 older ones i have no choice but to get out and about.
I will ususally feed joel just before we leave, so hopefully he will not need one while out, as entertaining the boys while i am feeding while out is really hard! LOL.
Joel doesn't have a set routine with sleep, so it works well for us as i can just go when i need to. I will usually wake him and feed him before we leave as he will wake when i pick him up to put him in the capsule anyway.
I don't stress about changing his nappy or anything else though before we go.

thanks for your tips, I will give it a go this week, I think I might ask my mum to come along as back up, just in case I struggle with the pram or something!
I really hope I can get over my anxiety of being out with her on my own.. Hats off to you mums with more than the one bub, it would be a real mission to juggle the kids, baby & what you need to get done on your own.
Hi Ladies,
Just wondering if any of you can confirm if this is a milk rash? I think it is, but being a first timer - well, you know!! He doesn't have a temperature or anything.
Thanks!

Hi,
Being a first timer I can't really give you a definitive answer. Maddison had the same rash just under her chin and I believed the same thing, either that or just where she dribbled out the excess milk that she had drunk and didn't want.
Sorry not much help. Hope it clears up soon.
Looks just like what Lachlan has. Pretty sure its just a heat rash, because of the layers i've had on him worrying he is too cool because of his stuffy nose.
But if your not happy with it just ask your GP to double check or even check with your chemist.
Thanks Ladies,
Nicki - you were spot on, I got the GP to have a look and she said it was just a heat rash.
Talk soon! :)
