Cameron's getting all they symptoms of teething - bright red cheeks, irritability, fever.... I gave him panadol this morning and this afternoon, and it soothes him a little. But I still can't any hint of a tooth. How long does this phase last? It's really hard on him (as it is with all babies) and it's so heartbreaking to watch - not to mention exhausting as I've literally had to carry him all day today.
I've also tried the gel but not sure how whether it's helping him much as he hates it and as a result is really difficult putting it onto his gums. I swear I end up getting it everywhere BUT his gums. Also, is there anyway to tell whether it's the top or bottom teeth/tooth that's trying to get through??

Generally the bottom teeth come through first but not always. My older 2 kids cut 4 teeth at a time & teething only lasted about a week but bub #3 is nearly 11mnths old & still has no teeth. She has been teething on and off since she was 2mnths old. The teeth come up & you can see them just under the skin, and then they go back down again. So as you can see there is no clear cut rule as to when or how long they will teethe for but they usually start teething somwhere between 4 & 6months and last for 1-2 weeks. Hope this helps.

Hi - we were lucky, well I should say that DS was lucky, in that he didn't have much trouble with his teeth. We had a few grizzly days but nothing too bad. His first 2 came up within 3 days of eachother and the second 2 within 1 day of eachother.
In regard to the gel, we had trouble putting it on his gums too and he seemed to hate the taste of it as well. We just persevered and he eventually didn't mind. I think he realised that it was helping a bit.
We thought it was just an old wives tale, but it was true in DS's case - if you firmly rub their gums with your finger, and the gum makes a squeaky noise, then the teeth aren't far away. Within 1-3 days of DS's gums squeaking, we had teeth! I've also heard that rubbing them firmly can bring relief to bubs and also can help with the teeth cutting through as the pressure helps to cut the layers closer to the teeth. When you think about it, this is what bubs do for themselves anyway when they chew on things.
Hope this helps and your lil man feels better soon.

I didn't even know that their cheeks can go rosy when they're teething. think DS is teething too, lus he has a runny nose too which only started when his cheeks went really red yesterday. But he keeps chewing on his thumb and there's tooth marks on some of his fingers but there's no teeth. nothing even remotely sharp and toothlike in his mouth... hmmm???

I'm pretty sure Cameron's teeth were moving about in his gums during those rough couple of days with the high temp. But on Sunday morning (after about 4 days), he's temp magically went back to normal. I went to change his nappy and found a little rash on his tummy. Didn't think much of it as mum had told me that some babies will get a rash after all the panadol they had (in a way, they 'realise' the chemicals. Dunno, must be a chinese theory...... :P) Anyway, i also put it down to another little symptom of teething.
It didn't get noticeable worse throughout that day - it didn't bother him at all either. Then about 10:30 at night, he woke screaming and crying hysterically. I noticed then that his rash had spread to his face, neck and back. OMG - I'd never been so scared in my life. Took him down to be the emergency room and they looked at him straight away which added to my fears. It turned out to be Roseola which is quite common among babies. The screaming and crying must have been a nightmare because once he'd fully woken, he was fine - giggling, laughing, playing. Even at the hospital he was happy - which made me look like a neurotic mum as I was the complete opposite.
Anyway, no real point to this post - just wanted to share my story! His rash is all cleared up and he's back to his normal self. YAY!!
