I have just read the whole thread on "Centrelink Payments" and gee there is a lot of helpful info there. I went onto the govt. website and printed off all the info booklets about what payments I may be eligable for once bubs arrives. etc Family Tax Benefit, Parenting Payment and Maternity Allowance.

But what is the money you get back for the baby at tax time when the working partner lodges a tax return
I can not find any info on this "rebate" but have heard a few people mention briefly about it.

Can anyone advise me on what this is and how you are eligable for this?

If I'm thinking of the same one you're talking about, it's $600 per child per year. EG I will get $600 for Vallerie, and about $100 for the new baby - because he hasn't been around for the full 05-06 tax year. But next year at tax time, I will get $1200, ie $600 per child.
I receive this at tax time, not sure if it's dependant on the working partner's income, because I still got it when we were separated. I don't think it's income or means tested, I think it's a lump sum that everybody who receives FTB is entitled to.

Hi
I have no idea what it's called...or even what it is really...but I do know that after both of you have lodged your tax returns you should get $600 extra :D Apparently if you owe centrelink any money they take that out of it and you get whats left. Also, you both have to do a tax return, even if one of you is not working...you can choose to have 'tax' taken out of one of the centrelink payments, can't remember which one, then when you put in your tax return you get it all back as a lump sum, as well as the $600. I get $10 a fortnight taken out, not much but comes in handy, kinda like a forced saving...I know I'd just spend it if I had it :o

I'm sure someone else will be along who knows more about this.

I didn't know about the $600. I don't think I got anything last year.

What does it come under??

Oh and yeah, I get $40 a fortnight taken out also as a "savings" plan. I love getting that lump sum back each year. It's like Xmas all over again!!

Yep it is $600 per child & you get that once your partner has lodged his tax return.

Polony, you should have got it. And I'm pretty sure, like I said before, that it's not dependant on your partner lodging his tax return - I received the payment when DH and I were separated.
It's part of the FTB payment I think, and yes they will take some off the top if you've been "overpaid" throughout the year.

Polony, if I was you I'd be looking into it - you might be able to get it backpaid to you this tax time!!

Does it make any difference that I am a single mother?

If you are single then you get the payment regardless of whether or not the childs father does his tax return, but if you are 'partnered', as centrelink likes to call it, then they wont pay it til both tax returns are thru, and they have to be in by the end of october or you miss out. My DH didn't get his tax done in time last year coz he ex-employer wouldn't give him his group certificate...we got that on oct 30  So we missed out on the $600 :(

The above is all correct though you dont both need to submit a tax return unless you work. However centrelink will not pay you until both tax returns have been processed and they checked your and his income or if you didnt work you need to notify them that you dont need to submit a tax return so they now to only await on your partners

There's also the baby bonus that you get with your tax return, it goes on the lowest income earners income. It is put in with your tax and I think the maximum is around $500.00, I got it last year cause I only worked part time for 6 months of the financial year. If you go to the ATO website, I would think that you would find info on there.

The baby bonus through the tax office isnt for everyone though. They scrapped it and brang in that $4000 maternity payment. (or however much that is) You are eligible for the baby bonus if you were an Australian resident at the time you became legally responsible for a child between 1 July 2001 and 30 June 2004 – for example, by birth or through adoption. the family tax part A supplement...

The Family Tax Benefit Part A Supplement is an increase in the annual rate of Family Tax Benefit Part A of $627.80. The supplement is paid after the end of the financial year when you and your partner lodge your tax returns. If you are not required to lodge a tax return, you must contact us.

If you have been overpaid, the supplement will be used to offset outstanding overpayments.

How does shared care affect the supplement?
Families who share the care of a child will be eligible for a portion of the supplement in line with their shared care percentage.

What if I only have care of a child for part of the year?
If you have care of a child for part of the year, you may receive a portion of the supplement in line with the amount of time the child was in your care. This may apply to a range of circumstances, for example, a new born baby born part way through the year.

What you need to do to get the supplement?
You and your partner must lodge tax returns. If you are not required to lodge a tax return, you must contact us.
If you want to lodge a lump sum claim after the end of the financial year, the supplement will be paid with your lump sum.

It's called the Family Tax Benefit Supplement:

The link to read about the Part A supplement is here:
http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/publications/ah1097.htm

There is also a Part B supplement

The supplement is only available after the end of the financial year when your payments are balanced. This will happen after you and your partner have lodged your tax returns with the Tax Office. If you or your partner are not required to lodge a tax return you should tell the Family Assistance Office.
