DP and I have always had seperate everything and shared bills since I moved in with him 2 and half years ago. Even now, since DD came along 8 months ago, I still pay half of bills etc as I have been receiving maternity and annual leave payments up till now. That runs out this month. I then plan to live on my savings until I return part time work next Feb.

I've always done my own tax either e-tax or through an accountant. Last year I listed what DP earnt and that affected the medicare limit thingy.

I also have my own investment property.
Should I be doing my tax seperately, or should I talk to DP about going together to see his tax person. Frankly I went to his tax person 2 years ago and got charged $250.00 for the privelledge. NOt impressed, so I did my own last year, (but had to pay back tax???) so I'm not sure what to do?
Any suggestions?
Cheers,

One idea is to maybe to your own tax through the etax software available on the ATO website (www.ato.gov.au). Before you lodge your return, check to see whether you will be getting anything back, or whether you will have to pay back tax. If you're happy with what you get back, then just lodge it yourself. If not, go see the accountant.

It might even be an idea to try to get the accountant to reduce his fees if he's doing the tax for both of you, or agree on a fee that will only be paid if you get a certain amount back in tax. You don't want to have to pay the accountant $250 as well as the ATO money...

I was of the understanding that if you are a couple, you need to list each others income etc. We always did our taxes separately but i listed him as my partner and listed his income and he did the same.
