View Full Version : My great caesar birth

My last birth was a somewhat difficult and traumatic vaginal delivery. Even so, I was nervous at the prospect of a needed caesar - better the devil you know, and all that jazz.

Well, my little man was born last week and I have to say it was a great experience.

We got there early in the morning, first cab off the rank. I was nervous as we waited in pre op and I got to don those lovely stockings. My husband and I laughed at each other wearing those puffy surgery bootees and got to speak to a Labour Ward Midwife, the anathestic nurse and the anathestist before we went in. I got to ask heaps of questions and all were answered honestly and pleasantly.

I walked into the operating theatre and the nursing staff all introduced themselves. We and the nurses and anathestist started joking around and laughing.

Before long, I was hunched over sitting on the operating table awaiting my spinal (which I requested instead of an epi). I was so worried it was really going to hurt. They numbed the area first with other needles, so all I really felt was a strong pushing sensation similar to when you get teeth out IYKWIM - a lot of pressure. Then they helped me roll over and it took about five minutes before I could no longer move my legs. It was a funny sensation, I could still feel my legs and it just sort of felt like pins and needles, and all warm.

I started feeling a little nausaeous but was given some anti nausea medication through my drip when I mentioned it and it vanished.

My OB and the paed were great, the paed spoke to me while the op started, a great distraction! My hubby was wonderful and supportive throughout. A lot of pressure and tugging but no pain. Then all of a sudden, pushing on my upper tummy, and my darling was born! They lowered the screen so we could see him straight away. Cried straight away, what a lovely noise! Little bit of suction to clear some mucous. Paed check and he was mine to snuggle and cuddle. After a while, they took him and weighed, DH cut the remainder of the cord, etc. I was stitiched up and spent 30 mins in recovery. Then we were in our room together! Lovely.

For me, my caesar was a beautiful and positive experience. Recovery is not hard, there is some pain but I have found it managable and comparable to my healing from my natural birth.

Only 30 odd mins in recovery and we were back in our room, soon to be left alone and cuddling :)

That's wonderful to hear that you had a great c/s experience.

My first two were traumatic, being emergency c/s procedures, but my 3rd was much better being and elective.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks so much ladies!

I can see how an emergency would stress you out, even with a natural birth, so be reassured that if it is a planned c, it can be just wonderful too.
