I found this article interesting, so thought I would share.
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Early weaning from breast-feeding appears to be one factor that predisposes adults to alcohol abuse and hospitalization for an alcohol-related diagnosis, according to data from Denmark.
The article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060421/hl_nm/breast_feeding_dc_1)
hmmm goosie I do wonder exactly where they got their facts from ... so I am off to read the article...
does it include kids that were never breastfed (ie would bottle feeding be better than early weening???) - cause I dont know anyone who is an alcoholic... but I know HEAPS of ff adults....

Hi Veve,
I think it is talking about not being breastfeed for long enough!
The article is referenced and its one of the factors that predisposes an adult to alcoholism.
I am sure there are plenty of other predisposing factors also.

Goosie, is this link really necessary ?
The article also states:
The investigators report that other factors linked to an increased risk of alcoholism were "male gender, maternal prenatal smoking, unwanted pregnancy (at the time of conception), maternal psychiatric hospitalization for alcohol abuse, maternal psychiatric hospitalization with other diagnoses, and low parental social status when the child was 1 year old."
These factors seem a lot more relevent than the early weaning link.
I was formula fed child as my mother regretfully was unable to breastfeed, be it though lack of support or whatever reason. I assure you that I'm no alcoholic.
I know you are quoting a true media article but it seems somewhat OTT.

blind freddy can see that articles too loose in its parameters and too many variables.

yeah, sorry. no haven't read the study. only the article. just got that first impression.
i was reading about all those other variables they mentioned, and the fact that there only talking about (i think) less than 3% of the sample population. it seemed to me like a long shot..........

Apparently i became so attached to having brandy on my dummy i demanded it every nite !!!!
Yep must have been cause i wasnt bf !!! Guess that explains my both sisters problems also
Funniest thing is the only alcoholic in my family has been my great grandfather & funnily enough he was bf

I'd like to see the original study and who funded it. I must be some kind of freak as I was weaned at 6 weeks and I can't even stand the smell of alcohol, same with my brother.

What a load of hogwash ... next they will be saying early weaning makes you become a drug addict!!!!!
Sounds like another excuse for adults not to take responsibility for their actions.

This article outlines the basics of a study which seems to show that early weaning can be one factor that predisposes adults to alcohol abuse etc. Other factors include
"male gender, maternal prenatal smoking, unwanted pregnancy (at the time of conception), maternal psychiatric hospitalization for alcohol abuse, maternal psychiatric hospitalization with other diagnoses, and low parental social status when the child was 1 year old."
Just like having mentally ill family members predisposes you to mental illness but doesn't necessarily mean that you will definitely have problems.
Thanks Goosie, it's an interesting read!
Goosie, again you have something that warrants some serious looking into (ie the benefits of extended bf) but have used a very dodgy, outrageous article as your means of trying to promote it. Im all for encouraging bf and its benefits, but this sort of stuff does nothing for the cause.
(Sorry i still havnt recovered from that guy who claimed he was traumatised and his whole life was **** because his mum used to let him sometimes cry at night)

Goosie, that was certainly food for thought. How interesting.
The researchers calculate from these numbers that early weaning increased the likelihood of alcoholism by 65 percent. It is a pretty high percentage. Yet another argument for the whole breast is best idea!
I would love to read the full study.

i think it worked out to be 65% of 3% (those with alcohol related problems) of the sample population. that's how i read it. so not very significant. correct me if i'm wrong though.
hey becca rae....glad to see i wasn't the only one who copped it. well i didn't really cop it but don't think goosie like my response

Come on guys, is it really neccessary to be nasty to each other??!:banghead:
I just want to remind people that it is possible to have a conversation where there is differences of opinion without it resulting in a slinging match. Lets not lower the bar of yet another thread, please. If this is not possible, this thread will be closed.

In my opinion (and mine only), I think that alcoholism is more affected by a persons choices - we all have the choice whether we let something influence us to a point of dependency. Yes, I know it is considered a disease but I don't buy that for a second. Some people are stronger than others and have more willpower or less willpower but I really don't think how long they bf affects that - it all comes down to the individuals personality!! I definitely think that social status plays a part as does the environment that people grow up in or live in but really early weaning......puulllease......People who were breastfed have drinking problems too!! And no study is ever accurate because there is always someone financing it that wants to hear a particular conclusion and the people who undertake the study will almost move mountians to get the "right" conclusion!! More interesting than the study itself would be which pro-bf group funded it.....
Just my opinion.......

Couldn't agree more Kelly
Read the article but not all the posts ..soryy.
I would just like to say, my ex was a MAJOR alcoholic and he was breast fed till 12months old!
But then again all his LOSER family are alcoholics too!
Maybe it's true what they say it's hereditary as well..
