Hi,
I'm looking for some information on Naming Ceremonies. We are planning to do this on DS first birthday. We would like a family friend to do the ceremony, but have not found a lot on google about what to include or various scripts. I would appreciate any help people could provide on this.
Thanks

HI

I had trouble finding stuff on Google as well. I had someone email me a 'Traditional Naming Ceremony' and I changed majority of it but it's good to give you a general idea. If you'd like me to email it to you, just PM me with your address.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if this is what you are after but the basic structure for a Naming Day ceremony (although this is flexible) is as follows:

* Introduction and welcome to guests
* Reading
* Godparent commitment (optional)
* Giving the Name
* Candle lighting / wish cards / balloons /butterflies/tree planting etc… (Optional )
* Reading
* Final declaration
* Signing of Certificate
* Presentation of the certificate

Music is an appropriate accompaniment to a Naming. You should use an original CD recording or live performance (copyright concerns).

The celebrant, family, friends or the parents themselves can do the readings, and the giving of the name and other parts can include the guests and other family members.

There are quite a few ceremonies posted on the net, although it does take a while to find them. If you go to your local library you can borrow a book called "ceremonies and celebrations" by Dally Messenger and there are a couple of naming ceremonies in there. Other books have sample ceremonies also, but i can't remember their names off the top of my head.

I hope this has been of some assistance,

Cheers,

leanne

I used a book called A Practical Guide To Alternative Baptism and Baby Naming by Kate Gordon, Dead Good Book Of Namings and Baby Welcoming Ceremonies http://www.welfare-state.org/general/pubpages/baby.htm . I have also since found a great book only available from the US I believe called Welcoming Ways Creating Your baby's Welcome Ceremony With The Wisdom Of World Tradition by Andrea Alban Gosline you can get it from Amazon I think or ebay. Some sites I found useful;

pm me if you like and I'll send you a copy of our final ceremony, we also had a friend conduct ours and it was so special, hope it all goes well for you.
