Hi all,

How do I know if bub is teething? I have read various websites but want to hear first hand experiences as to what symptoms they may display and what the gums look like etc??

hi taylasmum,
my bub as just popped his first tooth through, i found he chewed a lot on things mainly my finger and was more grumpy when taking his bottle. i could feel the tooth coming through, the gum felt rough at first and then next day very sharp and then a lil tooth appeared.

for the pain i used brauer homoepathic teething liquid, seemed to work and he didn't spit i out as he did with baby panadol, also curash teething gel worked better than bonjella.

hope this helps, also be prepared for you schedule to flip up side down ;)

peace

Well I think Tayla is teething. SHe has gone from sleeping through from 7pm until 7am to waking up twice a night, being really irritable and grumpy, not sleeping as much during the day, rash around her mouth and chin etc, not drinking as much from her bottle, not interested in starting solids!

How long do these symptoms last before a tooth comes through? I am going insane after a few days and she seems to go through these stages every 2-3 weeks which is doing my head in.

She has a teething ring, we use panadol and bonjela but still nothing seems to work!

How does everyone else cope with these things and how long will these unsettled symptoms last for?

Hi :)

All babies are different , but good luck with your bub & his teething dilemmas!

Jaykob showed no sign at all, he was grizzly arpund 4 months and i thought 'yep this is it for sure' and then he started sleeping really well and then outta nowhere came 2 teeth (@ 6 months) its only now that he has teeth that he dribbles so much.

I found amcals own brand of teething gel is great ( its not available at All amcals :/ but it comes in bubblegum or wildberry flavour and i tasted it ( im curious lol) and it made my mouth numb lol i couldnt talk properly !!!!)

Alot of people brush off all crying as "oh he/she must be teething"

You dont really know if it is until they are there !

My daughter has just popped her first tooth. For ages she had rosey red cheeks, a bit grumpy and chewing things all the time. She really loved it when we rubbed her gums with our finger. She was drooling abit to when she was chewing her toys. Now she will not let us look in her mouth or even touch her gums, as they must be very sore. We tried bonjella on her gum to help soothe it but she just screamed, so we are not sure if it stung her gum or not.

Try some teething rusks, my daughter loved thosed before her tooth came.

Hi there, yes the teething isn't fun!! Drooling, red cheeks, grumpiness, extra smelly poos which were runny was a great sign for my little girl plus hands in the mouth and rubbing teething rings on her gums. With a clean finger, run it along your baby's gums and you may feel lumps. Where the tooth is coming though the gum would look a paler pink/white. Molars are the worst. My little girl grizzled for months before they finally came through. I'd give her panadol before she went to bed and then if she was quite unsettled throughout the night I'd give her another - but of course not before 8 hrs. I'd also check her temperature to be on the safe side. Besides giving panadol and teething gels/rings, you could try a wet face washer or better still, I'd crush up some ice in very small bits and my little girl would suck on that.
All the best to you.

Hi everyone,
The women's and children's hospital in adelaide also put out a teething gel, which is supposed to help with teething pain and soreness. I think it is available from the hospital only.
Cheers :)

Chewing is normal for babies and doesn't mean teething. My baby chewed everything from 3 months and didn't get teeth until 1yr. I got sick of people asking if she was teething! Some babies dribble alot anyway and have to wear bibs all the time, he he. Mine didn't dribble at all (lucky me)

I'm glad no one mentioned temperature and diarrhea (sp.!) as these aren't symptoms of teething.

I once asked the health nurse about a cold and she kept saying she's prob teething oh i hope she doesn't get a cold everytime. She wasn't teething but i couldn't get an answer about the cold! Seriously you'd think a nurse would know better.

Mine got a red bum a few times (maybe coincidence who knows). No other symptoms really, i mean she got grumpy and had a few bad nights but i don't know if these were teeth or other "baby stuff".

I used Baby Teething Powder from the Putting it Right website. She loved it (maybe just a placebo for her).
