Hi!
My DS is only two and a bit weeks old and has a cold - I have been using the Fess saline drops, but at night he makes awful snorky noises that really worry me. Is he too young for me to use a vaporiser?
jazz always made snorky noises when she was a NB but the chemist recommended Tixylix but nowhere near bubs skin, so I used to pop it on a hankie and put it on the corner of the cot , only do this for a NB tho becasue a bigger baby might roll and eat it. not sure about the vapouriser tho, you might have the paint go mouldy on the walls..
I would probably raise the mattress under bubs head a little to help him breathe easier...use a normal pillow under the mattress if he's in a cot, just a baby blanket folded up under the mattress will probably be enough in a bassinet.
Try the vaporiser, or just a bowl of hot water somewhere near bubs bed...maybe add some eucalyptus oil or something to it.
Not much you can do when they are this little, my DS had a chest infection at 6 weeks so I know what it's like.
Hope your little one feels better soon :)

If my bub has a cold, I usually put Eucalyptus oil on me (well away from the nipple) while I am feeding, so that the vapours help to clear bubs nose, and make the feed less traumatic for both of us.

i agree with cwsmum about raising the mattress and someone told me something similar to what jazzysmum said but the told me to put some vicks or something similar on the mattress under the sheet or on a peice of cloth and place the cloth under the mattress cant say i ever had to do it but its worth a try
i hope he gets better soon

Persist with the Fess and elevate the matress at night, I also found that running the hot water tap in the shower and standing in there with bub helped, the steam breaks up the congestion.

Thanks! I will try this tonight - I hate it that he's sick! He's so little...

We used a vaporiser for my little girl when she was about 3 months old and it worked really well.
Howdy,
Not sure if you have used one, but get one of those nostril sucker things! They are the best! They clear their nose as they suck out a lot of the runny snot! It helps them breathe easier, we did this for our bubs a few times a day and esp at night before bed. You should be able to get them from the chemists.
I hope he gets better soon! Poor little mite! :crying:

All the answers above are great:thumbsup:
Just wanted to add, maybe you can try a natropath as they work with newborns and its all natural remedies which is

Thanks for all the great advice. I tried a few of your tips last night and the little guy seemed to sleep a lot more peacefully. I know I did anyway!! :o

my DS got his first cold when he came home from SCN at 12 days old and we were told to use fess little noses saline drops to suck out all the snot and stuff and to keep up his fluids. everything else acording to his peadatrician would have overwhelmed him coz he was still getting his strength back after being in SCN :)
