What the Heck is a Prefold?

Okay please excuse the silly query but what is a prefold nappy? I have some AIO and understand how they work but I keep hearing about prefolds.

How do you use them? Are they like the old terry squares that my Mum used and loved? Do they have to be folded in a special way? Do they need a cover?

I think that I may be becoming addicted to cloth nappies. Everyday I get on the internet and look up cloth nappies. :detective: Who knew that there was so much to look and choose! My mum and mother in law think that I am losing it!

I don't know that much about clothes but I do have some pre-folds so my nappy sassy friends tell me. They are like a terry flat but have been sewn so the thickness absorbed is in the middle saving a fold in an old fashioned folded flat.
