Didn't know there were because I had never seen one. But I wouldn't rule it out.

Interesting career choice for a male though, I don't know many men that are so passionate about babies and birth that they would make it their work.

I had one during my labour with DD - but all the births I've been to as a doula I've yet to meet one here in QLD but I do know one in Vic who is a homebirth midwife. :)

I used to work in an admissions unit of a university that offered midwifery - we would take a couple of males every year - but 98% of the applicants were women.

My friend had a male midwife when she had her DS and she said he was fantastic. She thought he was better than all the female midwives that she had to deal with.

i had one when i had my 1st. I felt really uncomfortable around him. But i have heard a lot of women highly recommend them. They say they are better then women middies

I had a male midwife with my DS and he was amazing. The most incredible man we'd ever met. He was better than 10 female midwives put togeher:laughing:. He'd been doing it for 20 yrs and even one of my Dr's said she wants him to deliver her own baby. He touched us so much that we also named our Son after him. Also when DS was born he cried - how sweet is that!

i had a male midwife for my first birth and he was terrific.
i loved that my partner had a guy there to help him deal with the whole labour thing, as he took instructions better from another guy than he possiblly would have from a woman. i felt very confident where my partner was freaking out1 so having a male support for him was great.

i also found that as a man he seemed a lot more respectful and in awe of a womans ability to birth a baby. the female middies seemed more blase , especially since many of them may have had there own children and so experienced labour and didn't think it was that big a deal.

male middies can be great:thumbsup:

i did not however feel the same about my male obstetrician who was awful, and yet there are heaps of male obs/gyn around....
go figure....

I actually wanted a male midwife, but there was only female. Im a bit saddened that less males are venturing this profession, less then females anyway.

When I had DS1 (nearly 17 years ago) there was a male middy who at the time was working post natal. He was fantastic but the woman in the bed next to me had a major hissy fit because he wanted to check her pad. I actually felt really sorry for him.

I had a male midwife for DD2, he was absolutly fantastic, so caring and knowledgable, real knowledge, he also shared my natural birthing beliefs. Fabulous man, couldnt recommned him higher. Sometimes I think women can get a little ummmm, impatient with other women and that whole, I did it , so you can too and get over it kinda attitutude, I think with men, as they never have done it, they are a little more compassionate to the whole thing.

There is a male midwife in Hobart.. Nice bloke and everyone speaks highly of him..

Even my mum had a male midwife about 20 years ago, and she said that it was the best labour because they are more compassionate than alot of women.

I had a male M/W when I was preg with DD, he was the most loveliest M/W i've ever come accross, would happily listen to my worries, I could msn him anytime if I was concerned, he would come to my place to check me over when I was stressing that something was wrong, he never got to deliver DD though, cause I ended up having DD here in oz, if I had had the money I would've flowen him over here so he could deliver DD

She's right though, Nigel was the best midwife we could hope to have with us. He was able to work out the kind of support we needed and then give it to us. He poured so much time, energy and emotion into that day, that we'll never forget him. He even skipped his lunch break!

Two massive thumbs up for the Mater Hospital in South Brisbane!!

I worked in Maternity in local public hospital in the late 90s and in 2004 and we had a few male midwives and one was the head of the Special Care Nursery
