can you do a strip wash in a front loader?

Yes you can. Same principle, so you can do it either with hot water alone, or with a tiny amount of dishwashing detergent (there are other strip wash methods, but these are the two I am familiar with). Set the water on 60 degrees and go for it. If using the detergent, just keep washing until no more deterget comes out, ie the water is clear of suds.
