Ok, i just made a betty crocker cake mix, and you had to add vegetable oil to it. Now after eating it i keep burping the taste of vegetable oil, so it's repeating on me and my yummy chocolate cake experience was ruined, ewww, do all packet mixes require oil in their recipe?? If so, that's grosse i'll make my own from scratch next time!

not all mixes do. i prefer the greens brand or even the cheap homebrand ones. if the kids are going to be around i grab the cheap ones and a heap of icing mix but if its just me and dh (and the little ones) i buy the greens ones with the icing sachet included. their orange and poppyseed one is delish.

Im not a fan of Betty Crocker products. I know greens and White Wings are ok though and i dont think you have to use oil in them.

Probably depends on the type of oil you use too.

Don't do cakes full stop. I'd only eat them otherwise!!

I love the Aldi packet mixes, they are really nice. I have made a couple and they always get compliments.

(And while you're there grab a packet of their chocolate chip cookies packet mix, they are bewdiful. Everyone I know who has had them raves about them. I am a bad influence).

Yeah, you should, once you start shopping there you will keep finding things that you like, start off small and experiment a bit. That's how I started, and now we buy heaps of stuff there because we prefer it. The list keeps growing.

Thanks Shed, we shopped there once and just bought mainly cleaning products, not any food items. Is there meat and that good?? I get barely any meat at woolies and spend probably near $70 on that alone. And we are not even big meat eaters. Sooo exxy it's not funny!

I used to always use packet mixes, savings brand from coles- 66cents. HELLO YOU BEAUTY!

I could make a million cupcakes in a week and it was convenient, but then I started to gain a lot of weight.... then I started to get tummy aches, then I had to read the ingredients on the packet and I realised it's probably not the healthiest so best to make them fresh.

Well now my cupcakes OWN. Or, I OWN my cupcakes, something like that'.

Try making them from scratch, "grlglrlgrllgrllrrr..".

Thanks for that, might have to go down and do a special little shop there. Definately could do with saving some money atm!

They are the fluffiest little fwends. :bee:
Oh and when you make the icing, go for the ol school' butter icing, whip unsalted butter and gradually add the icing sugar.

Thanks Ash, i made some cupcakes like that the other week, and yeah was surprised the icing was just a teaspoon of butter, 1/2 cup icing sugar and a teaspoon of milk, very yummy! And it was in a healthy cook book! :chef: Definately should make my own.

I love the homebrand butter cake mix, I buy two and make an extra big cake :chef:

Sometimes I even share it :D

Oh the Aldi ones are quite good too

In the better crocker ones, I replace the vegetable oil with melted butter...I need to diet...tomorrow

I have begun to make stuff ALLLL by myself :) I'm a terrible cook! A few years ago i bought a packet cake mix, and we did have any plain veg oil. So i put in Olive oil thinking it was the same, but.... IT ISNT! It was terrible! Just tasted like choc and olive oil! Perhaps you just had some particularly flavoursome oil!

All cake mixes need oil of some kind - whether it be veg oil, or butter/marg, it's still oil. You'll also find that if you are cooking it in the microwave that oil is recommended over butter as they dry out more. In saying that though, Green's and White Wings use butter/marg, not liquid oil.
