View Full Version : Factor 5 Leiden
Well I found out on the weekend that everyone on my Dad's side (Dad, his siter, his father and all my cousins) have this blood disorder. I am booking in to see my OB tomorrow for a BT.
Just wondering if anyone else has it and how has it affected your pregnancy?
I have been googling and frankly it's scaring me!
Note to self: Stop googling!
'Factor V Leiden is an autosomal dominant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autosomal_dominant) condition' This means that there is a 50% chance you will have it, depending on which of your fathers genes you received:(. From what I have read it doesn't sound to be too bad, especially if they are aware that you have it! If there are a lot of people that have it in your family, but there is not a history of pre-eclampsia or stillbirth I would think that it shouldnt really be an issue, and i guess during labour if the doc is concerned maybe they would give you some anti-clotting agents?
Good luck tomorrow :fingerscrossed: you dont have it!
Thanks girls ;)
I am a little nervous, I have to get my BT today. So will be a nervous wait!
I have done a lot of reading and really need to stop as it is scarying me.
I will let you know how it all goes when I get the results ;)

How did it all go?
I am Factor v Leiden, as is my paternal family. No-one in my family was aware of this at all untill I fell pregnant and was dignosed with a rather extensive DVT. I was in a wheelchair for months and had a horrible pregnancy. My Aunts who are all positve with it have been on the pill and have has children, yet they have never suffered from it. It's now 6 months since I had my baby girl and so far I am on to my 3rd DVT and also had my gall blader removed as a result from Factor V Leiden...
Dont want to scare you, but if you legs are extra sore, SEE A DOCTOR ASAP! The pain isnt worth ignoring.

I have Factor 5 Leiden, i got diagnosed with it when i was pg with my latest edition. I was only tested for it due to my losing my baby last year at 18wks gestation. They think it contributed to her death but they are not 100% certain. It didnt affect me at all with my first two, i never knew i had it. With Ariana i had to have aspirin pretty much the whole way through my pg with her, to prevent me from getting clots again. Like the others have said you have 50/50 chance of getting it. I have no idea who i got mine from, they havent been tested for it. Try not to worry too much. If you ever want to talk feel free to PM me anytime. Take care and good luck with your BT. :hugs:
