Saw this is the paper this morning....

Nappy happy (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,18921738%255E662,00.html)

BABIES who wear disposable nappies will cost their parents 250 per cent more than those that wear cloth, it has been claimed.

The woman behind a national week of celebration of the cloth nappy said cloth saved money and the environment.

"It's possible to spend less than $700 on a basic modern nappy package for your child, which will last from birth to toilet training," Real Nappy Week Down Under co-ordinator Lucy Westerman said.

"To keep a child in disposables for the same amount of time costs around $2500."

Ms Westerman said cloth nappies could also be used on further children and were much more convenient and fashionable than those of the past.

hi i tried cloth but just the terry flats. what is the best one and how expensive are the ones that are already folded? can someone educate me as i need to cut down on costs. i have found i need to change her more often in cloth than a disposable, is that normal? how many nappies a day would you use for an 8 month old? what do you do with then when you are out? what brand is the best/easiest to use?

please help me convert!

also how much did you guys spend to start up and what sort of pilchers do you have to use. i really hate those plastic pvc ones. but don't want to get the carpet peed upon.

OHH OHH-just had to share this. I made my first nappies for our DD this week-I adapted a pattern to make it bigger for her as she is a night time wearer. I feel sooo clever!!:smiliedance:

i think the more expense comes into the powders to wash the nappies not the nappies themselves. i dont buy the really expensive Huggies nappies just the wollies home brand ones for 20 for $5

i would have loved to use cloth on elise but with the hectic lifestyle of living in a motel (my DH parents ran/own it) when elise was born. i was still working most of the time so that extra washing just wasnt for me. with our next one although a while to come, i will love to use those hemp babybeehinds premade nappies they look and feel (friend has some) nice

As much as I love the compliments *takes a bow*, it wasn't that hard really. Just cut out the pattern and do some machine sewing. Actually this pattern was recommended to me by the lovely VEVE, and as a few people have shown interest I'll put the link here.

Clothy convert

I fold up terry flats in a particular way. Put in liner to catch the nasties. Do it up with a snappi and then put a diaper cover over the top. Not the PVC jobbies - these ones have a fabric outer cover and a meshie inner. It all just folds over the nappy and does up with velcro.

Terry flats $25 for 12

Snappies maybe $5 for 3?

Covers $2.20 each

I do disposables over night
