One of my girlfriends was asking me about nannies today and I had idea where to find info on them so thought I would ask the existing mums :)

Do you use a nanny, au pair, or mothers help?

From what age did you use them?

What do they do for you?

How much does it cost you? (if you dont mind)

Thanks guys!!

Hi

I haven't personally used a nanny but when i was 19 i worked as a nanny for a family and have also done lots of baby-sitting.

When i was a nanny i looked after a 3 month old girl and 2 and 5 year old boys. The 5 year old was at primary school and the 2 year old at preschool 3 days a week so i was mainly employed to look after the baby although i dropped the boys off at school aswell as picking them up and occasional weekend work.

Both parents did shift work so they were out at all hours so i was a live in nanny during the week but went home on weekends unless they needed me. I was employed only to tend to the childrens needs so had to keep the kids rooms tidy and prepare their breakfast, lunch and dinner and the parents got their own. I was responsible for everything to do with the baby - steralising, washing, changing, routines etc. If the parents were working, i would have to get up the the baby for night time feeds, aswell as the boys as they often woke up in the middle of the night for comfort.

The pay was $300 a week, aswell as accomodation, meals and use of a car.

I left after 4 months as i was being used. Even when the parents were home i would have to do everything for the kids and it wasn't right. The kids would come into my room during the night even if their parents were home, and the parents frequently went out at times when they should have been responsible for their children.

Hopefully that has shed some light on nannying!

www.findababysitter.com.au or there are other agencies but I think they charge a bit.

I get $560 for 4 days looking after 4 kids from 8.30 to 4.30. No petrol money, no super, no holiday pay. Have been with the family 14 months, since the youngest was 9 weeks old.
