View Full Version : Jolly Jumper - Is my DD the only baby NOT using one?
Everywhere I turn babies are in them?!? We have one tucked away in the wardrobe that was given to us when we had DS, but we used it once. Then our chiro gave me "what for"!!! So after talking to her I was determined that my kids would never be in one.
But I feel like I'm the only one - all my friends etc think I'm crazy for not using it to get "my time". But even if I used it I'd only leave her in it as long as it took to set the d@mn thing up, as per other recommendations by professionals.
And I haven't had a problem with getting time. I just put my babies on the floor like Mums did in generations past. They soon get strength and learn to get around (DD has just started crawling at 5.5mths ).
So, is there anyone else who feels the same way? Or am I alone?

I never used one with my kids. They did however enjoy one from time to time at my friends house, but were only in it for 2 minutes.
I also didn't see much point to it. Though they did love having a go on those few occasions. NOt enough for me to buy one though.
I got some "me" time during sleep time. Not sure why you would use one for "me" time. YOu still have to supervise them

I used one and found they were amazing for the days that bub was a bit energetic or i just wanted a minute for a coffee. Even put them in it while i did the ironing (i did it close by and watched them though). I wouldnt get much 'me time'. You cant walk away...even for a second. They are dangerous withbub potentially strangling etc. However for teh few minutes on the odd occassion i did use them. Also the baby grows too fast. They rather being on the floor moving freely. I wouldbnt worry about them. Totally unnessesary
Our physio gave us "what for" before we'd even considered using one. So no our DS didn't have one either.
To each their own though. We get assaulted with dos and don'ts by all sorts of medical professionals and well meaning friends and family and we all choose to follow some and not follow others. It starts to do your head in after a while and you just think "Stuff it. If my child likes this or that and it gives me some time to get something done then let's do it."

I never used one with DS, as I read somewhere that it wasn't recommended (tummy time is supposedly better for their development to help strengthen the muscles in their back/neck). I never saw the point in them.
no, I hate them, we were given ne, and my DH was really excited, but I said no, no ,n o!!!
glad to see im not the only one!:)
I'm sure there's probably plenty of people who don't use them. I never used one with DS.
I did recently visit a friend who has a 6 month old and an almost 2 year old and the 6 month old was in one while he made lunch.
I didn't see it as him getting "him time". I just thought it was a good idea so he could get anything done!

my girls have not used one nor will they.
DD1s physio does not like them and told me not to use them so that is a good enough reason for me to stay away from them. she knows a heck of a lot more then i do when it comes to these things so i trust her opinion on them.

I used one for DS and he loved it...but that said I probably only used it about 6 times and for a very short period of time as he needed supervision and it was much easier to play with him on the floor anyway....

we never used one with DS1, we were his 'jolly jumper' (he'd hold onto our hands and jump jump JUMP!)... we won't be getting one for DS2 either...
My son lived to stand, so we used one. I didn't use it for "me time" i used it for "he time" he wanted so desperately to stand and that way I could let him do easily :)
It was encouraged to me by my CHN and GP... and, despite the times he spent standing (not jumping, he never jumped, he just loved to stand... and pivot) he's hit all developmental milestones early. He also hated tummy time until he learnt how to roll onto his belly on his own accord. :)

We're not going to use one with DD we just don't like them, she has her playmat that she is happy with and loves to play with the little toys on them (plus she loves tummy time which is great) so I don't see the need for us getting one.

 I have never, and will never use one

:iagree: My sons have (so far .. one is only 6 months old ..) both hit all their milestones at least on time .. I spoke to a friend who is a physio - she said by all means use it .. but not for too long ..
atm .. Alex is in it twice a day - for about 20 minutes - and he WHINGES when I take him out (he also kicks his legs and smiles when he sees the harness come out).
I love it .. both my kids have loved it (I loved it as a kid too .. although it wasn't as modern as it is now .. obviously) ..
I guess each to their own - and all professionals have different opinions on what is good and what isn't .. you as a parent need to listen to your gut feeling.

Neither of my boys have used one nor have i ever thought to buy one.
I personally dont like them plus we dont have anywhere we could use it.
I have always used a walker for standing time while we played together for around 20mins & then it stops getting used once they work out how to move .... Thats when it gets dangerous lol :p
Squeak wouldnt have been able to use it anyways.
My DD only used it very briefly - but did enjoy it for that time. She tired of it quickly though and much prefered it when I jumped her on my lap!

My mum (who is a medical nurse not peads) got me one. we were in target and she said do you have a jolly jumper and i said no i hear they are bad for such and such reasons, she said every bubs has got to have a jolly jumper and she got the jolly jumper. i was telling my husband he thinks they are great as he had one and he remembers he loved it. so i was talking to the mother in law and she is all for the jolly jumper to.
but im like there is professionals out there saying not to use them for these reasons.
I dont like physiotherapist, but i have to see an orthopedic surgeon regularly for my back so i will ask him what he thinks of jolly jumpers. surly he would know right. im not going out of my way to see people and ask them what they think about them i will just ask him cause i have to see him this week
my bubs is not here yet so ive still got time to decide if i want the jumper or not, if i dont want it i will just take it back to target and get store credit.
i just wish when asking professionals for professional opinions they keep the personal opinions out of it. i find that on many topics from breast feeding to home birth and co sleeping dr and midwives want to tell you what they think not the facts :crying: makes it hard for a new mum to be like me, you have to filter out the c-rap before you get the facts.

I didn't use one, but mostly because the big chain that it hangs off worried me :D. All I could think of was that big bit of metal coming down because mummy hadn't put it up properly, and thumping down on my bouncing bundle's head!
I have seen little people in one and loving it though, and others who were a bit nonplussed.

DD used it HEAPS, DS hardly at all. Our chiro said it was fine when they were older, for shorted periods. He is of the opinion that people use it too soon and may be damaging baby's backs/necks.
DD was a screamer - wanted to be held all the time, colic and generally a very unsettled baby. We would put her in the JJ at dinnertime some nights, so DH and i could eat dinner together. It was 15minutes of bliss and happiness, so we were using it, bugger what others had to say about it. If we didn't it meant one of us holding her crying while the other scoffed their dinner.
DS is a very happy baby, he has used it occassionally, but he has been happy to stay on the floor, so that's where he spent most of his time. I would put him in it if I had to go out in the morning & didn't get a chance to shower before he woke up. With a 2yo running about with him, he was safer in the rocker or JJ in the bathroom where i could see him. But it was the rocker sometimes, JJ others, just depended on the day as sometimes he'd gat a bit craky in the rocker as he felt restricted.
I dunno if i'd have gone out & bought one, but if was given to us second hand by my sis, so used for the appropriate age/development & for short periods, i think they are great.
