Hey everyone

I have just found out I am 7 weeks pregnant and am a smoker. I am not a heavy smoker but not light either. I really want to quit straight away and I always said if i ever fell pregnant i would quit. I was all ready to quit until i read a webpage on the net about how it can stress out the baby when you are trying to quit. I've also read, its the best thing to do... quit for your baby.

I am ready to quit... but i dont know what to do. I don't get to see a doctor or anything for another 6 weeks.. but thats to far away as far as Im concerned...

Has anyone been through this or know the correct right thing to do...
any, any help would be great.

There was a thread a little while ago about hints and tips to help with giving up smoking. If someone can find it, maybe they can post a link here.:)

I also quit as soon as I found out I was preg.

I had read that quitting can stress the baby too but when I asked my doc, she said that it was best to quit & it shouldnt have any effect on the baby.

I suppose that it would stress the baby if you had a lot of trouble quitting & you were stressed out, but I found that if I ever felt like having a cigarette, I just thought of the effects it can have on bub in the long term & that was enough to put me off.

Good luck!!

Hi. I was a light smoker when I found out I was pregnant I quit cold turkey. And when I went through morning sickness, the very smell of cigarettes made me nauseous...

I don't know if it's true that quitting while pregnant can stress out the baby.

But - you may find that your newborn will go through withdrawals if you continue to smoke during your pregnancy.

The other things about smoking that helped me quit was - the risk of having a stillborn is greatly increased by smoking AND the risk of SIDS greatly increases if you smoke during pregnancy.

Good luck with your decision.

I quit cold turkey when I found out too.

I have been a smoker on and off for the last 6 years and quit cold turkey both times I was preggers. I had no trouble quitting and never felt like I needed one(I had a smoke the day before I found out and it made me soooo sick).

i quit over a week after i found out i was pregnant. no way i could have gone cold turkey but got there in the end, it made me feel really really sick and whenever i had a smoke i would think about what it might be doing to the baby and put it out fairly quickly!
i do know that u aren't supposed to use patches though.
good luck!

Thank you so much everyone...

It seems im not the only one who wants to quit... bub doesnt seem to happy on the idea of me smoking... just last night i went to have my "bedtime" smoke and i lit one up and couldnt finish it... i just feel so sick now even thinking of one... thank goodness

So hopefully that was the last smoke i will ever have.. i read the past threads as well and have decided a change in routine will be great

Once again thanks!!!

Hi Christie,

I used to smoke about 15 a day, and quit the day I found out cold turkey. When I got home from the dr's and lit one up, straight away I knew it wasn't just my health I was affecting! The guilt trip I put on myself seemed to work well in quitting, although it has been an easy 8 months...

I have had the occasional cigarette throughout my pregnancy, but afterwards felt sick and guilty about it, so I figured I didn't really need the"occasional" one anyway...I just thought I did.

All the best and good luck :hugs: :)

Hi Christie

I think if you can give it up asap that will be great for you and bubs.

I think the idea that it stresses the baby too whilst giving up has something to do with BP and the mother. Although not entirely sure. This pregnancy for me is a high risk pregnancy and my OB preferred that I didn't stop cold turkey but gradually so as to reduce the stress that I am already under with worry about this one.

I so wish I could just stop cold turkey though. M/S has helped a great deal to cut down.

You'll be a stronger person than me if you can do it and I will :smiliedance: for you. Goodluck :)
